How far is the drive from Loreto to the mission, and how long did it take to get there?
Thanks!

as I recall it was about a 2 hour drive ..into the mountains..(beautiful scenery)..well worth the effort...happiness is time in loreto one of my favorite cities.. if you have time in loreto check out the gift shop across the street from the mission/museum it's an historical bldg dating back a few hundred years and the staff are very friendly.

We plan to drive ourselves to the Mision Do I understand, there are local people there, who will act as guides and explain the history of the Mision?
Thank you for any advice or suggestions!

My question is related to your recent car rental - how did that go?
Who did you rent from and what happened with the extra insurance requirements.

I used the Mex Car- they share with Fox rental. The car was very nice and well maintained. I rented from Alamo once and they gave me a smaller car and it was old and dirty.
Recommend getting all the insurances. There are a couple of liability insurances that Mexico require on all rentals. Your US insurance coverage may not be accepted in Mexico.

I would like a contact for a Bed & Breakfast or something similar to stay overnight in San Javier.

Loreto is the starting point for a visit to San Javier. Hotels and other services are available in Loreto but I would not count on anything but a small restaurant in San Javier.
A good B&B in Loreto might be the La Damiana Inn. It has an open area, dining/living room, garden and kitchen for the guests to use. A full selection of other overnight stays abound from an almost 5 star on the waterfront to low budget($20-25usd per night) hotels.

We heard mixed reviews of the pilgrimage. Some say many people get totally drunk and there are no restrooms along the route. Does anyone know if this is true?

I never saw anyone drunk there, only reverent pilgrims visiting truly religious ancient site. Like an oasis in the midst of no-where. There are no restrooms on way there as you are traveling on secondary road thru wilderness!

I did not hike this area. It was about an hour drive from bottom to top.

If we don't have access to a car is it feasible to hire a taxi? Where would you find a tour out of Loretto? The cruise tour is filled.

As a Loreto resident, when we need to book a tour for family or friends, we use Taxi #18. His name is Oscar and he has a van suitable for 7 people. Oscar is very knowledgeable and will take you to San Javier, Lopes Mateo (to see whales in Feb.~ Mar) or north to Bahia Concepcion. Basically anywhere you want to go. His prices are fair and he speaks very good English.
