We drove up to spend a few hours at the two hides on the edge of the bay.
Two things struck me with our visit over the New Year. The first is the state of the track down to the car park. Thankfully we have a crossover, so managed to get down, albeit very slowly. Anyone in a car or low vehicle would have great difficulty. I wouldn’t call them potholes, more like black holes, I fear if a small car went in one, it would never be seen again. This needs some serious maintenance sooner rather than later, before someone leaves their exhaust in one of the lakes.
The second issue, which isn’t the fault of the RSPB, but should be dealt with by them, is the rubbish brought in by the high tides. It’s not very nice to sit in the hide looking out at a tide mark full of buckets, plastic bottles and rope, to name a few items.

Hi - thanks for your message.
I'm not sure who were advised by but I am very happy to say that they were misinformed!
The cafe is open to everyone, and we welcome both those who are visiting the nature reserve and those who simply wish to stop by for refreshments.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

I went into the shop at the Silverdale RSPB to be met by the most delightful geordie gentleman. He was so friendly and entertaining and I have never felt so comfortable in a retail setting. He was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of birds and equipment. He was well presented and I think his name was Dave. I would come back and visit just to interact with the gentleman again. What a delight 5 stars.

A beautiful day out, perfect for all. Good paths for anyone with mobility issues. Some excellent views from the various platforms. We had the opportunity to see some spectacular wildlife. Lovely to see it fairly busy, good parking available. Cafe is located upstairs.

We had a great visit to the reserve with our grandchildren. The day looked grey but we managed our visit without getting wet. We saw a number of water birds but our grandchildren were most impressed to see the deer at close range from one of the hides. The weather must have deterred other visitors as we had the hides to ourselves.

Hello Jane - thank you for visiting and for posting your review here!
We're delighted to hear that you and your grandchildren got such wonderful views of the deer - and to have the hide to yourselves must have been an added treat!
We often see fewer visitors on those days with bad forecasts but our micro-climate often results in quite different weather conditions than those expected. We hope to see you again soon!

We have been here several times now in search of the elusive Bitterns that breed here but als , not sighted yet but heard.
We love it here. It’s a lovely gentle walk around the site with hides to watch the birds & other animals from . Last visit we watched Ospreys fishing , Marsh Harriers patrolling the margins, geese, ducks & gulls galore. One area where there is a platform to watch the birds going to the feeders is next to the entrance. We had some really good close up action of Green , Gold , Bull & Chaffinches along with Great , Blue , Long Tail , Coal tits. A buck & two doe Red deer ventured out from the high reeds to feed to top our visit off.
Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Hi,
That's wonderful to hear. We agree that Leighton Moss is a brilliant place to slow down and feel the benefits of being out in nature. We hope that we will welcome you back soon, despite the distance, or perhaps you might like to visit another of our 220 nature reserves around the UK that are closer to home

From the moment we arrived at RSPB Leighton Moss, we were greeted by friendly, welcoming and knowledgable RSPB staff members at the entrance to the visitors centre who told us lots of information regarding the site as well as the benefits of joining the RSPB. We then had a wonderful day, from 10 am until 4pm, enjoying the beautiful scenery and glorious wildlife of Leighton Moss. We saw dozens of bird species on our visit and had the most relaxing, peaceful and wonderfully calm day. This is a fantastic place, and if you do enjoy birdwatching then the hides (of which there are five) are a great place to rest your legs while looking out onto the lakes to photograph or look at the birds and otters. We paid in (£9 each) on the first occasion but then we joined the RSPB, so when we returned two days later it was free entry. Two great and memorable days were had. Thank you.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for leaving your fantastic feedback, Chris! That's great to hear, and we hope that you have had the opportunity to visit some more of our 220 nature reserves with your membership. It sounds like you made the most of the visit with your lengthy stay, and were rewarded with some brilliant wildlife encounters. While we do have five hides on the main reserve, we actually have a further two hides down on our saltmarsh - we hope you have since managed to visit them to see the wading birds probing the pools.
Thank you for taking action to save nature by supporting the RSPB!

Wonderful place to look for birds with knowledgeable staff and good facilities including hides. I know that food is not the focus of visit to LM but apart from (excellent) soups and good cold sandwiches recent food offerings have been disappointing. A steamed (rather than toasted) ciabatta with a sliver of Brie (mostly rind) and cranberry was a low point. Best focus on the wildlife.

Hi there,
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We're glad that you experienced some wonderful wildlife on your trip to Leighton Moss, and we have passed your feedback on to the team.
We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed in the choices in the café; we value your comments and have taken them on board when designing our new menu. We hope that you informed our team of your disappointment in the ciabatta on the day and they were able to offer you an exchange.
We hope that we will welcome you back to Leighton Moss soon for another day of birdwatching!

Are there any signs of a starling murmuration yet?

Is it dog friendly

Dogs ARE allowed on specific paths at Leighton Moss but not on much of the reserve. The dog-friendly paths are clearly signed and our team at the visitor centre will be happy to show you the appropriate routes. Thanks!
Are the paths accessible with a pram or do they get muddy when it rains?
RSPBLeighton M
Silverdale, UK
Hi Rebecca - all the hides except one (Lower Hide - the furthest from the visitor centre) are fully accessible to pushchairs (and wheelchairs). The paths are well maintained and only in extreme cases do they get flooded - I'm happy to say that they are pretty dry at the moment so you can get around easily. The paths can get a little muddy in places if it's very rainy but on the whole you should be OK! Have a great visit!

How big an area is rspb leighton moss?
chrishansford

Leighton moss is quite large, from the visitor centre to the lower hide is just about a mile, and from the centre the other way is something like 3/4 of a mile, I am in my 60's and find it no problem to go from one end to the other, because it is very flat, with lots of hides and benches to rest .But I would suggest you go two or three times and do it justice.I hope this has been of some help

Is there a chance of seeing a starling murmuration last weekend in Oct? And also what are admission prices?
Casterthe1st
Leeds, UK21 aportes
Leighton Moss is one of the well known starling murmuration spots Colin and there should be a good chance of seeing them sometime between September and November - dependent on when some of the migrant ones from various parts of Europe arrive. Sorry, but I can't say for sure what'll be happening the last weekend in October. I'd give the Centre a ring on 01524 701601 and I'm sure they'll be able to help you with better info re chances etc.
It's free to enter the visitor centre and cafe. Admission to hides and nature trails is Adults £7, children £3.50 (first child and under 5s free), concessions £4.50. RSPB members and those who have travelled to the reserve by public transport or bike, get in free.
Hope that helps.

Jackie G

No, you can simply turn up and begin to walk! There are several different hides, which are all well signposted. The volunteers are often around and will offer any help you need. There are also special events at different times [check the website for details] and a helpful board at the back of the shop which shows sightings of the day.
