We went to Mission in Sonoma, near the town square. It is a small place, but impressive! Informative and interesting info on walls. Plus they have explanation leaflet in many languages

This is well preserved historic hotel and v with out buildings in the center of town. You can go into some of the rooms and wander around the property. There is a little museum on the premises that has good displays and signage. A small gift shop has souvenirs and books for sale.

Unfortunately, due to California state COVID policy almost all interior parts of the State Historic Park are closed.
You can walk around the outside of the buildings and read about what happened here in the 18th and 19th centuries.

We didn't have much time here, but you could spend a while meandering about - especially after visits to the area wineries. Would love to return with more time. Really pretty place with no shortage of history lesson.

I was amazed at all the key American history that took part in Sonoma. Most of the historic sites are within a mile of each other. Easy to visit all of them by walking.

We took some time, waiting for the shops to open (some opened at 10, others at 11) and discovered the Sonoma State Historical Park and its many buildings.
We walked around, read signs giving us a better understanding of the history of Sonoma, Spanish California and enjoyed learning about the adobe Petaluma mission - the barracks, servants quarters and the General's home.
There were many activities listed on a poster of interest to families. Think they would be fun to attend.

We loved wandering around this legitimate history park. Very well done and relaxing to walk around and absorb the interesting history of Sonoma and its early struggles and culture

The mission was interesting but way over crowded. Also it seems more like a pass through thing to get to the Sonoma square. And it is so renovated that it almost doesn’t look authentic. I liked the adobe Petaluma mission so much better for the authenticity. It was neat to see the old hotel and the old rooms. My favorite thing there was the mural on the back fence that looked like shadows of people living back in the old days.

We strolled around Sonoma (later we went to a winery outside of town), and the State historic park is absolutely worth visiting. It consists of 5 or 6 buildings including the Toscano Hotel, the Mission San Francisco, the barracks, the servants quarters and General Vallejo's home (which we did not get to see). There is also a gift shop in the barracks. We got gifts for the grandchildren and learned quite a bit about the early history of Spanish California.

There is a large free parking lot behind this Park, and there are always empty spaces (even on weekends), so when we come to Sonoma, (as we did on Friday May 3) we always drive there to park our car. To get to the Plaza, one can either go around on the sidewalk, or can cut through this small Park.
We always cross the Sonoma State Historic Park, as it is never crowded, and just a pleasure to take that short walk through such an historic area. There are no more than a dozen buildings here, all important to early California history. Many of the buildings are closed, and cannot be entered, but from the outside, they still provide a picture into the past, and are worth a look. This Park was founded in 1909, and was centered around the Mission. Later, more historical buildings in the area, were added and restored.
There are huge trees here, which provide welcome shade on hot days. Also, there are benches to sit on. One can either walk around, or just sit on one of the many benches and absorb the historic atmosphere. As it is never crowded, it is almost always quiet, except for the many birds chirping away.
