Good trip. We arrived at approximately 8:30 am and made our way towards the entrance of the trail. The trail was separated into two parts- with a longer extension of the trail available for more scenic views and hiking opportunities. There were informational plaques located throughout the trail, detailing what we were seeing in front us. The first portion of the trail was a short, moderate hike to see the gorge. The second portion of the trail was a longer hike, that took you alongside the gorge, river mouth and Lake Superior. The second trail made a loop around to the shorter trail, and was also moderate in nature. The first portion of this trail took you around the gorge and water, and the return loop back took you through the forest and wooded area.
Tip: I recommend spending 1.5 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

This state park is beautiful. Nice hikes and beautiful views. I feel like this one is a little underrated. Go appreciate it!

Great State Park on Hwy 61. This river was flowing well with all of the rain and late spring snow. This state park starts on Hwy 61, and has limited parking along Hwy 61. The trails to and near the Temperance river are easy to follow and find. We were there in the off-season so it was not crowded. The river flow was impressive. The park was very close to our base camp and we enjoyed all aspects of this park. Lots of good trails to take. I would recommend stopping at this park if you on Hwy 61 on the North shore.

Gorgeous views within feet of Hwy. 61. Can be a quick stop or a short and sweet 3-mile hike if you just need to stretch on the drive up the shore. Don’t miss both sides of the highway and know that you can get right up to the edge of a steep and treacherous gorge. We saw people of all ages venturing beyond designated viewing areas to take selfies. There’s a line between fearless and reckless in my mind. Walk the path up to the bridge above the gorge and you’ll see all the awesomeness from safer points and many angles along the way.

Another beauty. Park on side of #61. Walk across road to the falls and hike. We did the Hiking Club loop which I believe is the Upper Falls (West side) Everyone goes to see the falls but we saw no one on the hiking trail. It was a nice 2.5 miles hike. You walk along the temperance river for the half of the hike and in the woods the other half. We really enjoyed. Walk back across #61 and go down the stairs to see the waterfall which flows into lake superior. We are so lucky to live in this beautiful state.

Beautiful waterfalls along the trails. Rock ledges. Various levels of difficulty to choose from.

All we did here was walk a short distance downhill from the parking lot to where the river runs into Lake Superior. The falls here were pretty and the mouth of the river was very pretty. Worth a short stop to see this. We did not take time to see the rest of the state park so we did not see the Hidden Falls which are on the other side of Highway 61.

Easy to see the falls right from the wayside stop before you enter the park. Falls start on west side of road and fall into Lake Superior on the east side. Some easy steps down to overlook bridge.

Great hiking along the Cauldron Trail that follows the Temperance River. 0.7 mile out and back trail passing roaring cascades through carved canyon walls. Easily accessible from parking area along Hwy 61. Only mildly strenuous. Make sure you look on the other side of the road as the Temperance River flows into Lake Superior.

Is the $7 daily pass usable for any of the state parks along the coast (as long as they're visited in the same day)? Thanks!

The pass will work for any state park on that day.

reviewers mention the parking off the highway - is it an actual lot or just some roadside thing? thanks!

There is an actual lot with parking spots on either side of the road. But they do fill up so there are a lot of cars parking on the wide shoulder as well.

Hi! Is there any particular trail we should take to get to the swimming hole or cliff jumping?

Temperance River SP is really not very big and it is easy to navigate the trail system. There are only two trails, the Gitchi-Gami Trail and the Superior Hiking Trail. Both go far beyond the park boundaries. Just get a map of the park, either online or upon arrival at the park. Find the Temperance River Gorge and the waterfalls on the map and take the trail that leads to it from where you are standing. The gorge is where you can swim, jump off the cliff and view the waterfalls. Have fun!

Are the hikes to the falls accessible for someone who has some difficulty walking on uneven surfaces?

It could be a bit difficult. The main trail that I remember starts on an even paved path but that ends quickly and I don't think you get a view of the falls from that paved path. It's a short distance before you see falls, but it involves walking over uneven boulder surface and potentially also unpaved dirt trail with tree roots. So if the short distance (think less than 0.5 miles). The park map (available on the state parks website) shows the Gitchi Gami State Trail is another option for seeing the gorge if that will suffice - it's not the falls but in some ways I thought the gorge was more dramatic.
