Went on a Sandhill Crane Kayak Tour in November of 2022 of the main navigational channel next to the Hiwassee Island on the Tennessee River. We saw hundreds of migrating White Pelicans and Sandhill Cranes and 4 juvenile bald eagles. Pretty cool experience!

Well. It is that time of year. Again. The sandhill cranes have arrived in large numbers. An amazing experience.

It was a little past season for these lovely birds but there were still quite a few present. Their song could be heard as we drove up and then we saw a large group in the field on the right. The pavillion provided shelter from the light rain and we appreciated the educational displays.

YOU should see some birds, but don’t expect to get within a 1/4 of a mile at best😕Bring a GREAT camera or binoculars😳IF I could of trucked in a telescope I would of😮The road back to the Outlook is one lane and in overall weak shape😳 The Outlook itself is nothing to write home to mom about. The whole area is fenced off and you can see the birds in the distance. STILL, enjoyed the flyovers and the sounds they make😄 Expected better views😕

The viewing platform is perfect. Plan on “hanging out” for a while and see them flying. They let you imagine that you are in a prehistoric time. Of course timing is everything. To see the cranes you must come at the right time of year and any water or hiking activities are not allowed, so it is only a viewing experience.

We try to go once a year to see the sandhill cranes. It is an amazing sight. And can be noisy when they call each other. I have many photographs of them,it's hard to delete any. Area is mostly limited but you are still able to get a good view. Bring binoculars / long range lenses. Sometime birds fly directly overhead but if they are on the river, they can be difficult to photograph.
It's only roughly an hour from where we live so it makes for a good afternoon outing. In addition, there is a historical site nearby that was one of the places where the Cherokees were rounded up to begin the Trail of Tears.

We went here to see the sandhill cranes. There were thousands. This time of the year most of the area was blocked off.

This was my first time to view the Sandhill cranes at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. I am new to birding but had a great time photographing these birds. I would have given the experience a 5 star rating if the viewing area had been just a little closer; made me wish I had a longer lens. Greg B

The viewing area for Sandhill Cranes and other wildlife is terrific. Easy access with only a 25 meter walk from your car.

Today we visited the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge for the eighth straight year to see the Sandhill Cranes. It is a delightful experience. There is a good viewing area from the platform provided by the wildlife center and another viewing area from the platform near the Cherokee Removal Memorial. In addition to the Sandfill Cranes, today we saw six white pelicans which are birds rarely found. We were told that a whooping crane has been seen this year but we did not see it. We did see a whooping crane from the wildlife center platform five or six years ago. This is something to experience in December, January and February while the Sandhill Cranes are in residence.

When is the best time to see the sandhill crains in 2017

The Hiawassee NWR, National Wildlife Refuge is one of the wintering grounds of the Sandhill Cranes. NOW! While the Annual Festival is in late Jan or early Feb., anytime during that period is a good time to go. Early morning you may have fog/haze hanging over the river so you need to use some discretion and planning. Check the weather for the Birchwood area. Morning and late afternoon are best as the birds activity level is up because they are feeding. Take a good camera, not just your phone and a pair of binoculars if you have them. Follow the signs back to the viewing area. You will not be disappointed.
Enjoy

Trying to decide if we should stop at the Refuge on our way south around the middle of February 2016. Can't seem to find any current information about crane counts at the refuge or best time of day for viewing. Appreciate any information or comments. Thank you.

Sorry for answering almost a year later but the information is current. Usually around mid-to-late January to early February is the Sandhill Crane Festival in Birchwood TN. So to answer your question directly, yes, mid Feb is good. From my other posting, anytime during that period is a good time to go.
Enjoy
