Founded as a private library in the early 1800s, the Athenaeum today is a cultural and social center for the North Shore. It's still a membership library, with oak tables and plaster busts and a library atmosphere, but visitors are welcome. There is always an exhibition in the front salon and in nice weather you can sit or stroll in the beautifully kept garden. Nathaniel Hawthorne and Nathaniel Bowditch were members, and there are historical books and objects here, along with the latest periodicals and literary best sellers.

Celia Thaxter, artist, poet, author, founder of America's first artist and writer's colony on Appledore Island is celebrated in a historical exhibit CELIA'S SALON at the Salem Athenaeum. Authentic artifacts, photographs and memorabilia, WORTH THE VISIT, which coincidentally ties in with the Childe Hassam exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum.

A very very old library institution. It's a really interesting building. Very beautiful. Certainly worth a drive-by if you are in the city.

I'm a lover of libraries, so if they are not of interest to you, perhaps you would overlook this beautiful place. This is a private library (membership only but visitors welcome) that also hosts year-round events; I recommend checking their website, as they host live concerts (chamber music, for example).
Not only is this a gorgeous building, but the staff is more than happy to spend time with you to give a brief tour / history. When I visited, there was a fantastic exhibit of old bookplates, which one of the employees was more than happy to discuss with me. This building is not far off the beaten 'tourist' path, and is well worth your time.
And... they still have a functioning card catalog......

Surely one of Salem's best-kept secrets, the Athenaeum is an elegant membership library (one of only 16 in the country) in the city’s historic McIntire District. It was founded in 1810 as the union of the Social Library of 1760 and the Salem Philosophical Library of 1781, and both the building and the collections are steeped in history. Native sons Nathaniel Hawthorne and Nathaniel Bowditch were both proprietors here. Come spend some time in the gracious Colonial Revival building and learn about the contemporary, classic and historic book collections, and the Athenaeum's rich offering of lectures, courses, language and literary discussion groups and concerts. Visit salemathenaeum.net for more details.
