We four birders had very limited time in Punta Arenas during our NCL cruise but Cris ensures that we made the most of it. He quickly took account of what birds we had already seen, what to target and how to schedule the day. As a result we saw as many of our priority specie as was possible including the wonderful Magellanic plover. Cris is clearly expert and we would recommend him highly, whether for a day trip or for a longer tour. He speaks perfect English, is highly organised and wastes no time. He also serves a mean cookie. Cris was our guide for a simple, one-day birding trip from Punta Arenas down the coast of the Strait. We started with some local hotspots, and Cris got his spotting scope on a dozen lifers within a half hour. Then we hit Ruta 9, pulling over at several secret places for great looks at seabirds and upland species alike. We toured the Estrecha park and he gave us a history tour there, and we ended up at a protected reserve where we had incredible looks at a kingfisher, critically endangered geese, snipe, and a treecreeper. We made our way back and picked up a few species we had missed.
What really makes this tour special is Cris. He is a kind and interesting guy and he was focused on giving us the tour we wanted. He helped us with fine points of identification, photography tips, natural history, and Chilean history. He even gave us some good restaurant tips and helped us book an appointment with a non-English speaking clinic. One of the best birding tours I’ve ever done.
