Lovely cafe literally right on the beach at Chalkwell. Very nice staff. Good menu. A great day out for my 98 year old mum!

A nice place for a walk in the middle of autumn - probably not so much in Summer - the beach itself is quite small and the dog walkers are out in force here (& not all of them clean up after their pets). It looks fabulous at sunset when the tide is out, even looking across the working harbour. Lots of places to eat & drink & buy fresh fish of all sorts.

We enjoyed our walk along the Leigh on sea pathway to Chalkwell, going past the busy Bell Wharf beach, this is a popular place for dog walkers so take care😉

Took grandkids to bell wharf to play on the beach, see the seal and have lunch. Great day out for all of us

It’s a beach, a small triangle sloped down from the wharf where the nitrous sniffing boys strut around trying to impress the heavily caked girls.
Only part of it is like that. It is reasonably pleasant to dip your toes. But south of France or even north of Norfolk this is not.

I think this is the only beach in Leigh that is accessible when the tide is high (though it is reduced to a smallish triangle of sand) and is also the only beach near Old Leigh.
A few benches, public toilets and too many dogs.
At low tide the beach is obviously a bit larger and it is a good place to look out over the mudflats and the stranded boats.
Not sure how this deserves a 4 dots rating on TripAdvisor as I think it is quite unremarkable.

This is the only real beach area in old leigh so it can get busy on a hot day but mostly there is plenty of room to sit .Always better whern the tide is in but you can say that about all of southend ! Toliets and cafe's all nearby

It is still the same now as 50 years ago, the place will never change - a lot busier now though and lots more cars

What a find! This beach is clean and an attraction particularly for small people with buckets and spades. The tide is fairly close by, so take care where you walk. There are benches where you can sit and have a picnic, or where you can sit and enjoy the local food and drink on offer. Parking is very limited so you may care to park some way away from here and be prepared to walk.

the beach is a mile or so away from stations and is at the bottom of a hill/slope. Unless you have lots of stamina a taxi would be advisable
Is it swimming allowed?

Hello,
Your review was really helpful. Thanks! Just checking that Bell Wharf Beach is what you meant by Leigh on Sea beach, please? Is that the best one? Do you think it'll be crazy to try to park there on Monday given that it's a bank holiday and the weather is supposed to be sunny?
Thanks so much,
Chloe

Bell wharf beach is old leigh on sea, its a very small beach and I would think being very hot and a bank holiday the beach and all the pubs and eateries in that small road would be extremely busy. There are a couple of very small carparks and when we have been misweek they are almost full. I think you would be better going by train

Is it far from the train station?

very close, Leigh is better and it's along a flat that takes in some quite picturesque old town. Stop for cockles on the way!
