This small museum packs a punch. The exhibits are thoughtful and very well laid out. They tell the important story of the Acadian people in Canada, most of which I was not aware of before traveling to this region. A definite must for anyone in the area.

Miscouche is next to Summerside, the second largest city on PEI, and the museum is worthwhile if you have some spare time. There’s a good mixture of visual images, texts, and an informative video.

Excellent museum and the lady working there was also very nice and helpful. As tourists from Louisiana, it was so interesting to see the similarities between Acadian culture and our Cajun culture.

This one of the best museums I have ever visited and I have visited many ( ask my wife!) but this is of course telling a story from one point of view.

It is missing the British rationale on the deportation i.e the Arcadians who were essentially Basque and not that happy being part of France and certainly not part of the Britsh Empire saw themselves as an independent "nation" and Roman Cathlolic.

The Briish and the French had been fighting for 800 years and when in the 16th century English King Henry Eighth broke from the Catholic Church the wars became routed in the respective religious groupings of Europe. The Brits saw the Arcadians as more loyal to a foreign power the Pope than France who had surrendered Canada to the victorius English so the Arcadians were left in limbo.

Clearly the English did not want to have a potentially hostile and isolated group left in such a stragice position ( the gateway to Canada) so they set out to redistribute the 10.000 Arcadians to France ,Quebec ( where the English allowed a French colony to thrive) and Louisiana which was French at the time. Those who "decided" to go back to France were transported in good faith but unfortunately many ships were lost in storms.

It is great that the Arcadian story which started in the 16th century when they came to Cape Brecon just for the abundant cod in the summer should be kept alive but shouldn't the museum have a stronger recognition of the the British motivations particularly with reference to the deportations or return resettlement as they may have called it at the time?

The Acadian Museum at Miscouche is a gem. If you want to learn more about the plight of our Acadians this museum is the place. If you want the history of how some of the Acadians populated Prince Edward Island after their deportation by the British, this is the palce to go.

It is not a huge museum and can be visited in a little more than 1 hour. The displays are great follow a specific order. You'll get more out of them is you read the information found at each station. There are hosts ready to answer your questions. Great visit

This was our first introduction to the plight of the Acadian people during our two week visit to the Maritime provinces. It provided an introduction through a short movie about the forced relocation of the people and how it affected the region, the land and the politics. The exhibits basically reinforced what the movie showed, which with additional more specific local information about the Acadian people in the area.

We spent an hour in this amazing little museum. The 15” introductory video explained the history of the Acadians in the maritimes and outlined the deportations that took place. The permanent and temporary display rooms are very professionally constructed. The attendant was very knowledgeable and friendly. This is a real gem on the island.

A must stop to learn and understand the plight, history and culture of the Acadians of PEI and around the world. A short video presentation sets the stage and covers the key points one will see in the museum. The Acadian flag was inaugurated in Miscouche, which was also one of the primary Acadian communities, and the location of the museum. Interesting.
