WE had two couples visiting Canada from the UK and decided to take them here for a visit before heading to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. They really enjoyed the walk around the Big Rock displayed, and the history of how it arrived at this unlikely location millions of years ago.

Enjoyed a walk around this fascinating and unusual large rock just outside Okotoks on a sunny warm evening.
It’s amazing how it was left behind in this area. There are a couple of information boards near the rock itself. There is a short walk from the car park and there is a ramp as well as steps.
There are basic washrooms here too.
Worth stopping off here if you are in the area.

Amazing huge rocks that were left by a glacier on an otherwise flat landscape. Had seen it on the internet then was pleasantly surprised that it was on our route after leaving Black Diamond. This site is a short walk from the parking area and was perfectly made accessible with an elaborate ramp with railings.

The Rockies are far enough away to make the story of this erratic impressive. Quartizite was forced to the surface in the Rockies. Rock falls caused some of it to fall on top of glaciers. When they melted, some of these rocks were carried along in train-like fashion. This was the largest one. The site is shared with many little critters who will not turn tail if you are quiet and slow moving around them.

A nice little town with shopping areas substantial enough for a city 2 or three times the size. A short drive (< 1 hour) to the Dinosaur area in Drumheller. The Museum is world-class for exhibits of local finds. T-Rex, Brontosaurus, raptors, etc. Easy commute to Calgary.

We spotted this from the road on the way to Okotoks
There is a parking area with basic washrooms and a path leading to the big rock.
There are information boards that tell you about it and easy walking around the structure and back.
Definitely worth a visit if you are on the area.

Located on HWY 7 between Black Diamond and Okotoks Alberta. There are parking spaces available for free. A little path will take you close to the giant rock and the signs will explain the reason why the rock is resting in the middle of the foothills.

A very interesting rock as it is not from this area. Easy to see and find. A place to visit if you are in the area.

It’s great if you like rocks. I loved the colour of the rock and texture. It made me very excited to see such a beautiful national momentum.

An early fall trip was nice to break up the drive with this Erratic. If you have time to travel off the main highways, I recommend this as a rest stop. It’s a walk from the parking and a sight to see and consider the power of the elements.

"During a period of mountain building between 80 and 50 million years ago, the Rocky Mountains were formed from beds of sedimentary rock that were thrust up and eastwards. The source of the Big Rock was discovered by looking for quartzite – the Rockies are predominantly limestone, and quartzite is less common in the Main Ranges. Big Rock was originally part of a mountain in what is now Jasper National Park. During the last ice age, sometime after about 30,000 years ago, a large rockslide crashed debris onto the surface of a glacier that occupied the present day Athabasca River valley, and this debris, including Big Rock, was carried out of the mountains on the surface of the glacier" - I copied this information from Alberta's Culture and Tourism website (not able to post the HTML here)
