This is one of the most impressive Carnegie libraries in Scotland. Just a short walk over the old bridge from the centre. An impressive building with all it's original features, grand staircase, spectacular stained glass. It's good to see a community library very much used and obviously loved from the comments on here. It houses an interesting local history section which I will revisit when open properly, they welcome visitors and it is an asset to Ayr.

An absolute gem of a library. All the staff that I have met have been super nice, super efficient, super helpful. We must all use our libraries, they are such assets to the community. Once they have gone they will never be replaced. They must be treasured.

I love this library. The staff are very helpful and the children's library is colourful and interesting as is the computer area.

Such helpful and knowledgeable staff and a warm, welcoming ambiance. What an asset for any town to have.

Really impressive range of books, magazines and a helpful staff mean that a visit is enjoyable, but often curtailed by the absence of toilet facilities.

Very good selection of fiction books available in this library which I use regularly. The non fiction section is not bad but the highlight is the local history area upstairs which has Tom Barclay an expert on Ayr and Ayrshire history in charge.

A great relic of the era of industrial "benefactors". Lovely architecture. A great shame most of the other Carnegies have been destroyed. This functions well as a library of course, with lots of separate sections and space for temporary exhibitions... 🤴

My wife and I are librarians (indeed, we met in a Carnegie library!) so we always take a look at a town's library.
Ayr library is actually over the bridge in Newton. It is emblazoned in terra cotta on the front with all the high ideals visiting a library affords--philosophy, history, literature, etc (no mention of Mills & Boon).
A superb example of a 100+ year old library, with many of the fittings and fixtures extant and well cared for.
A word of advice to the staff. The Grand Book Sale, at £1 each non fiction and 40p otherwise, is priced too high to clear your mound of discards. Even for the un-canny English, 40p and 10p respectively is about right!

Old established library with extensive book selection, wheelchair access at the rear but no car parking other than the streets outside.
