A dual World Heritage site, this archipelago rises out of the Atlantic in NW Scotland. It has the most important seabird breeding station in NE Europe. The islanders were evacuated in 1930s as their way of life was no longer sustainable. Day trips from Western Isles during certain months of the year

Landing by RIB on St Kilda on a gloriously sunny day is a once in a lifetime experience. The history is fascinating, the scenery stunning and the wildlife, especially puffins abundant.

This was an absolutely amazing day trip and well worth the cost and the lengthy time at sea. We went with St. Kilda Cruises on a 55ft Interceptor boat that could only hold about 10 people. It had a nice enclosed area with a small bathroom and an open stern area with some seating for those that wished to be outside. St. Kilda was just astounding and every bit of it was so picturesque. It was interesting to imagine the former residents living their entire lives here (without one tree). We visited the adjacent sea stacks on which 1000's of birds were nesting. A welcome snack was served on the long trip back to civilization. The day trips are booked far in advance so make reservations early.

This is one of most unique places in the whole world. Yes the whole world. The weather conditions make it hard to get to, although this year has been exceptionally good. Totally unique. Nothing you can say can describe the feeling of standing within the village and thinking, "how on earth did those people live here ?". The fact that they know the names of the family that lived in the houses really brings it home and making it more real. What we didn't realise before our visit was that the newer houses are built right next to the "blackhouses" they superceded.

I did a day trip to St Kilda with the company Kilda Cruises , sailing from Leverburgh in South Harris. The boat was full, 12 passengers and had two excellent crew. Fortunately I picked a sunny and smooth day.You have five hours ashore which is enough to wander around the ruins of the village, visit the former church, former school with its little National Trust for Scotland stall and the small museum, as well as walking to the hills surrounding the village ( "the street"). Almost as dramatic as Hirta and its ruins are the other islands in the archipelago. Often collectively called the stacks. Some incredible sea cliffs and hundreds of thousands of nesting sea birds. A long day and its not cheap, but WELL worth it.

Fantastic experience with Kilda Cruises. Really incredible experience. It was very misty on the island and when we cruised around the stacks but that added to the mystique. Kilda Cruises were excellent. If you suffer seasickness I would recommend taking something before journey as a few people suffered.
Beautiful island and great walks on Hirta. Se stacks and Boreray were my favourite bits though. A trip of a lifetime

Fascinating ancient history and beautiful atlantic landscape. Rather hard to get to. That makes Kilda pretty unique in Europe.

Don't go on a day trip as you will spend more time at sea than ashore. This presents a problem as there is no overnight accommodation for tourists. You should go with a reputable operator who can accommodate you overnight on their ship. You need a full day to see The Village and walk around the main island. Watch out for Great Skuas, which are very aggressive.

Bonjour,
Cordialement

Hi, andrew. What would you like to know about this attraction? Are the boat tours operating year round?

From the Isle of Skye the boat trips operate from late April until the end of September. Be prepared because some get cancelled due to weather. 110 miles out into the Atlantic the later you leave it in the year the more chance of cancellation due to weather. My first trip in June was cancelled due to strong winds, and my second two weeks later was done in perfect conditions. But from the end of August Atlantic winds increase. From Skye the trip normally takes around four hours to St Kilda or a little less.

Hi, im not sure about chartered heliflights. Certainly the MOD use helicopters, but as far as im aware (I may be wrong), the only way for visitors is by boat....good luck

What is the most affordable way to visit? We haven't been able to find anything under £180 p/p.

Hi, I just came across your question on TripAdvisor. If there was any cheaper way to get out to St. Kilda, we'd have found it. SeaHarris is a few pounds cheaper than Kilda Cruises, but that's it.
Best thing to do is make it a special occasion, a once in a lifetime opportunity, and save up for it. Make sure that you find somewhere to stay on Harris that is fairly close to Leverburgh. The boats leave at 8 a.m.
Good luck, and enjoy!

I would like to stay on St Kilda -possibly working as a Volunteer to help conserve some aspect of the island's (Hirta)
archaeology or natural history.
How does one btravel to Hirta?
Is there accommodation on the island?

The only accommodation on St Kilda is where the National Trust for Scotland has made some of the cottages habitable. To stay or work there you need to contact the NTS.
