My wife and I visited the Dunbar Town House - We'd 17 May22. Nicely located in the high street so you can't miss it
A hidden gem of Dunbar History and information and it's also a Picture/Painting Gallery.
The very helpful staff were very warm and friendly, especially 'Mhairi' (Celtic name) who actually offered us a guided tour of the upstairs Civic Offices & old Gaol.
Our tour guide was a volunteer named Pauline.
Pauline has an excellent knowledge of the Dunbar Civic Offices history and Town House.
The tour also included a visit to the old Gaol and to the bottom of the bell tower
We enjoyed the tour very much as Pauline was always happy to answer questions.
A lovely cozy building and very worth while a visit rain or shine. It's Free admission, but they do appreciate donations in the box in the entrance hall.
We totally recommend the Dunbar Town House.
Thanks once again to all the staff & volunteers for making our afternoon in Dunbar a very good experience.
Kind Regards, Dave & Kaz, Shropshire

The staff is great. Gordon was there , brimming with knowledge and dispelled some long-held myths about John Paul Jones' associations (and assignations) with local women of ill-repute ! Then again, these rumors for the 1770's MIGHT be true, and a lengthy coverup / sanitization might be in process! in any case, this wee museum is very definitiely worth a visit to learn about Dunbar's history and life and times. then a quick tour round the building and adjourn out for an ice cream and then, tour the Muir House (or it that HOOS!). enjoy your visit and walkabout, which the Museum staff can help you with too !

The volunteer offers a great tour of the Council chamber and cells. She knows a lot about the history and put it across well.

Lovely warm welcome to the small museum. The museum attendant was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
Didn't see the town House but will go back.
An excellent introduction to the interesting and varied history of Dunbar.
Also another room with unique displays. Intrigued by the artwork!!!
Also the little film on the long lost outdoor swimming pool. Such a shame!
Just a note on Dunbar itself. What a lovely place and it's almost living history museum itself. Lots of information displayed around the town. Obviously proud of their heritage!

Small museum on the High Street which opens at 1 pm in Summer and is free with a donation welcome. There are a lot of information boards about Dunbar and showing photos from the past. You can ask the assistant to put a video on which lasts for about 8 minutes showing a variety of short films taken many years ago. You can see what a uniform was like that a soldier of the past would have worn. Sometimes there is a volunteer from a local history group to take you a tour of the building to see the Council Chamber and jail cell which would have been nice but there wasn't a volunteer there.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a 4* review. I am sorry there was no-one able to take you on a tour of the building, as you say, guide are volunteers for our local history society, and not always available. If visitors are particularly interested in a tour, please contact us in advance of your visit and we will do our best to ensure there is someone available.

Although this building is not open as an “attraction” in the winter months, it is worth coming to see as it is a most interesting and impressive structure that is the undoubted highlight of Dunbar’s Main Street.

Thank you for leaving a comment on our beautiful Dunbar Town House. During the winter months Dunbar and District History Society open for us from 2pm - 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, and they would be delighted to give you a tour including the Council Chamber and historic Jail Cells. From April - September we are open every day 1pm - 5pm.

Hi Rhona
Thank you for your 5* review. The film of the swimming pool is very popular, so many of our visitors remember swimming it (and how cold it was!)
