The Petroglyphs were clearly visible with a lot of markings that come from a different era and time - and just to see them made me think that we are just a small drop in the ocean … people before us have unknowingly left an impression to the beauty of life.

We stopped at this park to view the petroglyphs and to see McGinnis Lake ( a meromictic lake). We did not realize that we could see petroglyphs in this part of Ontario. The park has a building covering the site to preserve the petroglyphs and park staff were available to answer questions and explain the carvings. The Learning Centre building had very educational exhibits. It was interesting to learn about the traditions of the Nishnaabe people. We are older adults who still enjoy learning new things and we believe it would be a wonderful park for young families to visit. There are also trails to hike and picnic tables. This is a day park (no overnight camping).

Beautiful Park, lovely trails, awesome sacred stone carved by native Americans staff were nice and knowledgeable although it seems they were a bit bored. I noticed a staff member lighting the help desk on fire and blowing it out?!! Not sure if this is seen as respectful for such a sacred place.

We made a day trip to this park. It is quite a distance away but worth a trip. All the directions are clearly marked. The distance to the petroglyphs is less than 5 minutes from the visitor centre. We had to pay an entry fee/ car park which was nominal. There is a very nice lake in the park as well.
The visitor centre is very informative and they also have badges which are great for girl guides.
Photography is not allowed so be aware.
Enjoy

A bucket list destination for many years, we finally made the trek to Petroglyphs Provincial Park.
We were looking forward to seeing the petroglyphs but we didn't know how much we would love hiking through the park

The petroglyphs are a protected and sacred site for the indigenous people. There are no photos allowed, but totally worth committing to memory.

The hiking is amazing. The trails are gorgeous but the view of the lake is stunning.

Make the trip to north of Peterborough to visit Petroglyphs provincial park and enjoy the beauty

Very nice provincial park to visit. I’ll go back again. Staff are very friendly, and helpful. Just a heads up, there’s a lot of walking involved here, but it is worth it. Currently during the week it’s free to get in. Down fall is the information center has no power right now, due to transformer issues, so unfortunately you can’t go through it. But I’m sure it would be as amazing as the rest of the park. There gift shop, is stocked with some really interesting stuff, reasonabley priced. Get off your couch, and go pay this park a visit. It won’t disappoint.

lovely well maintained facilities and well groomed paths. The walk to the petroglyphs is short but informative with plant information all around. The petroglyphs themselves are beautiful and the history is well explained. It's a special place that's for sure.

Lovely, sacred, peaceful spot. The learning center was very well done and the Petroglyphs were wonderful. What a great learning experience. Please be respectful and do not take pictures inside or around the building holding the Petroglyphs, this is a sacred area and this is fully posted but unfortunately I saw three people doing this. If you cannot appreciate the privilege and follow the rules stay home. We also did the Nanabush hiking trail, this was an easy, beautiful and well marked trail. Remember there are no facilities at this Provincial Park. Staff were helpful and informative.

The Provincial park does not offer any camping which can be annoying if you are travelling from aways but it’s worth the trip if you can make it out. The hiking is your typically gorgeous Canadian forest scenery with small untouched lakes full of wildlife (snakes, toads, turtles, etc) and cool rock formations. The Petroglyphs themselves only take about 10-15min. It’s a large open concept room surrounding a rock with many carvings on it. The site is a type of “Mecca” for the First Nation, extending all the way down to the Cherokee tribe in the U.S.A. It was discovered by a Canadian who then banned them from using the sacred site and used it for ticket sales until only recently. This in the end though did lead to it being a protected Provincial site. The different tribes from all over N.A. Will come and use it for sacred purposes and are allowed to do so on an invitation basis. Everyday they still must do the burning and smudging rituals whoever is tending the facility. The Petroglyphs outline the deities, way of life, and important symbolism. The reason why they are so visible is due to the Canadian who found it decided to paint all the Petroglyphs black so they would have more appeal. They are not Pictographs so they were not originally painted, just carved..

The visitor center is great, with a self visit tour explaining the culture of natives. Then we go to a separate building where we can see the petroglyphs.
We didi one trail just nearby the visitor center of 5kms which was nice but we prefered the second one we did near mcginnis lake west side. It was a great tour inside the forest.
We did have lunch near lake McGinnis but there is a trick : the west side is overcrowed whereas the East side was empty and there is also a picnic area so if you prefer a quiet zone go to East side (you can cross with your car from one road to the other easily)
