We had only 30 minutes to visit this place so the volunteers told us to quickly walk around the inner rooms and then would take us for a quick guide - the fellow who took us around was very mindful of our timescale so he rattled thru all at top speed which was very kind of him - seen cells, gallows etc very educational and well worth a visit - although I would advise to leave hour or so - I cant remember the guides name but he was a tall lad.

We stumbled upon the heritage centre on a recent visit to Nenagh for a funeral. We weren't sure we were in the right place but just go in and the staff are very welcoming. Inside the main building there are various exhibits of rural life, typically 19th century. It's not glitzy but if felt authentic. Best part was when one of the staff offered to show us around the gatehouse, which is where prisoners were held before execution. It sounds macabre but he really brought it to life with lots of true stories and black humour. There was no charge for this tour, but the enthusiasm of the staff here was obvious. Well worth visiting if you're in the area.

This is a really interesting place. My daughters were interested in all the exhibits (the classroom with the nun mannequin in particular!) and they were fascinated by the switchboard as they are only used to smartphones!
The man (apologies I didn't get his name) who did the tour in the gaol was brilliant, quick witted, really knowledgeable and explained things simply for my daughters so they could learn too. The prison cell was definitely an eye opener with all 4 of us plus the man doing the tour inside the cramped cell! I was really impressed with the heritage centre as it was free, the staff were friendly and it was a really interesting insight into life back in those days. Definitely worth a visit.

I really enjoyed a visit to the hertigae centre recently. The lady on site was incredibly friendly and was a fountain of information about the history of the building as the governors house, the prison that stood here and the gatehouse for condemned prisoners, The place dates from the 1840s and you'll definitely get a sense of it's history when you visit. A lot of the prison buildings are demolished now but enough survives adjacent to the heritage centre to give you and idea of the scale of the place.
The Mercy Sisters have a lovely convent building behind the heritage centre.
I saw it from the top of Nenagh Castlw across the road, so wandered in afterwards. I'm so glad I did.
Such a friendly welcome and I learned so much about the history of the building and the town itself.
Check before you travel for irs not open every day, but well worth a visit.

A missed opportunity. Staff were wonderful and helpful. But why fill a purpose built building with junk? I thought I was going to hear an account of prison life, hear about crimes committed by inmates, a story about individuals, the names of those executed, a story of the times these people lived in. But we were just directed to rooms with old tools etc. it could be so much better. I wanted to know the story of the prison, those who controlled it and those that occupied it and those who were killed there. I wanted to know about those who took over it, why and how? It was free… so maybe I shouldn’t complain?

Visited feb 2022. Libby our guide was a fountain of knowledge and made our tour very enjoyable. Very interesting history of Nenagh and well worth visiting with free entry too. Nenagh castle across the road with great views. Eamon, Cheryl & the uninvited guest 😉 (you know who we mean Libby) can definitely recommend a visit 👍

Really helpful staff: a great addition to the town. Had a query relating to an old building (my home, hundreds of years old just trying to find out some finer details which is surprisingly hard) and although the heritage centre deals with genealogy the staff member I spoke to via phone on 10th August ‘21 was very helpful and pointed me in the right direction. A great sign of a person that even if they don’t have what you’re looking for they go above and beyond to help you.

This is definitely worth a look if you're near the town. They had great exhibits upstairs in the old prison building. The info provided by the staff was very good, concise and we learned a lot in the short amount of time we were here. They have an old shop and a classroom setup at the moment which are really cool. We visited on Friday August 14th.

Interesting museum with friendly and helpful staff. However don't bother with the genealogy person as she is dismissive, patronising and not that knowledgeable about the vagaries of areas along the Tipperary Limerick border and which county district information is registered. Seems to be only interested in advertising rootsireland as a genealogy search tool.

The entrance to the school house or heritage centre as we know it is free I do believe it is open 5 days a week, not on bank holidays I believe, adults and children are welcome and you do not need to book, the same with the castle also free but does not open Monday's, and closes from 1too2 each day for lunch, the surrounding field is pleasant to sit in and maybe have a picnic. Please note the stairs at top of castle are quite narrow and can be slippy when wet, same with stairs in the basement of the heritage centre, take care but do enjoy,
