So, when your 71 year old friend tells you you’re going with him to learn whitewater kayaking on the Futaleufu River, one of the most beautiful, powerful and dangerous whitewater rivers in the world, what do you do? You pack your bags and join Expeditiones Chile where Chris Spelius and his team perform their magic and make whitewater kayakers out of greenhorns in a week.
The instruction was professional, thorough and detailed. The practice sessions were fun and rigorous. The river sections were incrementally challenging as we watched our skills develop. Each day built on the lessons learned and previous teaching with just enough challenge that prods you on to continued success.
On top of all that, El Campo de Tres Monjas is heaven on Earth. A picturesque Eden with just the right balance of pampering and rustic to make this an adventure of a lifetime! The food is sumptuous, prepared by some of the most wonderful people south of the Equator.
So, did we conquer the famous Class 3, 4 and ‘holy sh*t’ class 5 rapids of the Futaleufu River after one week of experience? Of course not. That will take years of practice on more approachable waters to build a resume worthy of the Futa. But for me, a 62 year old reasonably fit guy who had never been in a whitewater kayak before, I learned all of the basic skills to become a whitewater kayaker including rolling the boat with the ‘twist and slice’ technique. We learned on the Rio Espolon, the Rio Azul and yes we did even spend some time on the Futa. It was amazing!
I can’t recommend this program enough and wholeheartedly endorse the entire team at Expeditiones Chile for the experience of a lifetime. Go ahead, get out of your comfort zone. Do something that later you’ll say, “I can’t believe I did that!” Instead of, “I wish I had done that.” You won’t be disappointed.
