Puerto Chacobuco is a very small town that serves as a tender port for cruises. Our port talk reinforced that there was very little to do in town so we took a tour from HAL of North Patagonia. The pace was slow as we rode in a bus along the Rio Simpson valley. We stopped for rest and walks by the river in a federal park. Photo stop came at the "Virgin Falls". Then onto Coyochoice the new capital of the region. This town was home to our guide who loves Chile and his home town. WE stopped for an extended break in the twon square where local artisans sold their wares Also the pedestrian street off the square offered more shopping options. We wandered into the small Cathedral in this town. Clean and well loved the wear showed on broken concrete steps and some broken colored glass panels. But the church was real and well used. The tour included a snack which was a slightly formal affair of a plate of arranged samples of Chilean specialties with choice of water or wine at a local restaurant overlooking a picturesque ravine.
The turn around back down the highway was calm and framed by the Andes on one side and the rolling hills of Patagonia on the other side. Our five hour tour was pleasant.
This is a quiet country tour with no dynamic 4X4 rides or drops down a mountain. But it captured the rural rawness of Chile.

We were very disappointed in the content of the Coyhaique City Tour, especially when comparing its $155pp US cost to that of excursions we took in Puerto Montt, Stanley, Ushuaia and elsewhere that were as much as half the price but much richer in content. Our guide, Luca (sp?), a Coyhaique native, was a genial and knowledgeable young man who did the best he could with what he had to work with, but he and his community simply don’t have a lot to display to visitors like us, based on what we saw.

It was a long drive from the port to the city of Coyhaique and when we arrived we were advised 1) there weren’t a lot of shops or restaurants open because it was Saturday and 2) we would spend about 20 minutes here before heading back in the direction we came to stop for lunch at a local ranch.

The lunch stop at the ranch was the unique experience of the tour but while it was interesting to see how the lamb asado was prepared, the food was mediocre and we were crammed into a barn-like dining hall so tightly the people at the table behind us had to completely leave their table for us to have enough room to exit, ourselves. If a qualified U.S. fire marshal saw the situation they’d cite them for operating a dangerous establishment.

On the way back, the guide made a suggestion to stop for photos at what I can only describe as a dead tree swamp. None of the passengers were interested and if I’d bothered to take a picture I’d share it here so you could see why. It was a swamp with dead tree stumps, but that’s apparently what qualified as a place of interest on this escapade.

In short, don’t waste your $$ on this tour - certainly not at the $155pp price. I wish we’d given more credence to some of the less-flattering reviews we read and bypassed it, ourselves.

Be prepared to be in awe of the surroundings. We took the Casa Penaflor tour with Angi. She is an excellent guide and host with a great sense of humor. Her good nature ribbing about us being 1 minute late back to the van made us laugh. Her description of the area showed her expertise and love of the area. The stop at her home where we met her husband and had homemade cake and coffee was a highlight. We had a fun, engaging time with her and highly recommend!

We spent a lovely shore excursion with Angi of Puerto Chacabuco Tours. In less than an hour we were whisked to beautiful Andes scenery. The views were stunning.

Angi took us to her beautiful home and property outside the town of Coyhaique. She served us a homemade dessert along with beverages. We learned a lot about the area and the opportunities in Chile. The day was delightful!

Spending seven hours on a bus with only a half hour each in Coyhaique and Simpson Valley was pointless. Ignacio, our guide, was delightful, and the driver was very careful driving over the Andes. The Simpson Valley Visitor Center had concrete mock-ups of mammals in the area and a stuffed condor and osprey. All information was in Spanish but could be translated if visitors had a QR code scanner on their phones.

A short hike to the Simpson River left travelers to their own devices to manage steep, unpaved hills and tippy rocks parallel to the river, obviously not recommended for those with mobility problems.

We were on a cruise and one of the ports was Puerto Chacabuco. We signed up and went on the Biosphere Tour. Tina was our guide and she was fantastic. Tina is fluent in German, English and Spanish. She was both informative and fun. I would highly recommend this tour and others the team gives. We met up with a few of the other groups for lunch and everyone had a wonderful time!

We recently took the Viviana Sur Tour which was the only shore excursion I could find that fit into the half day our ship was in port, and I knew there was absolutely nothing to do/see in Puerto Chacabuco itself. It poured down rain that day (which I understand is fairly common in Puerto Chacabuco) so visibility was poor. It was well-organized, and I believe the scenery would have been lovely had we been able to see it in better weather. That said, we were very crowded in the vehicle to the point the guide had to sit on the floor in back! After getting out several times to view waterfalls, etc., we found it uncomfortable to be wet and packed in so tightly. This was the shortest excursion we took out of nine ports, but one of the most expensive and offered the least amount of activity and interesting sights, even had been a clear day. All in all we didn’t feel it was a great value for the price we paid.

Dear Linda, i am very sorry, that you felt so uncomfortable in this wonderful scenery! I am sure our Guide explained, that the Region of Aysén is the MOST isolated Region of Chile. Everything what we need for living it has to be brought by Ship or Airplane. This increases the prices 100%. Because of the missing infrastructure und 95% unpaved roads we have (or actually not have), new cars are old cars after only 5 years! All together the price of 110 USDollar for a 4 hour Tour in the unspoiled wilderness, which is very good explained in the description, it is a very fair price! Again, i am sorry, that you couldn't enjoy what this fanstastic landscape and pure forrest is all about here and you couldn't get in touch with this! Hope you will find what you are looking for on other tours! Thank you for your comment and wish you all the best! Angi

Signed up for this tour because of a cruise critic discussion board. We were met the port of Chacabuco at the arranged time and were taken to the Aysen disctrict. Our guide Tina was excellent and very informative. A german by birth, she has been living in Chile for about 14 years and is fluent in German, English, Spanish and some French. She answered all questions. at the end of the tour we went to the tour operators own home (a beautiful view) for pisco sours, water, beer and German cakes. She is also german. We spent a wonderful time there getting more interesting facts about Chile. We also toured the town of Coyhaique. A very good tour

...the surrounding area is stunning. We were there during a sunny day. When the fog rolled in you realized what an awful day it could have been. Soaring peaks, well maintained naturalb history museum in a park. Read up about the area before you go to enrich your experience.

I did the tour of Aysen´s Lake and Lagoons with guide Angelika Deutsch in February 2019.
Angelika is a very friendly guide, fluent in Spanish, English and German, who took me to places that the large tours could not reach. We had interesting conversations about the local culture; overall it was a very pleasant tour.
