For a calming morning during our week-long stay at Soda Bay, we enjoyed the nature paths at Clear Lake State Park. There were only a few campers left over from the Memorial Day Weekend; otherwise, the place was deserted. Not so good for the park, but quite nice for us to have the birds and other wildlife to ourselves.

Clear Lake the city is nothing much. There might be one coffee shop. The city is a lot less picturesque than I expected. But Clear Lake the lake is fantastic.
Who knew that place was here? The lake area is fantastic for driving, hiking, or just plain sight-seeing. Read up on the geology before you visit and you'll get so much more out of the experience.

The town sits on this lake. Many small hotels and restaurants sit on the lake. Have seen a couple of boaters on the lake this past week.

As I sit on our rental home deck gazing out onto the pea green algae infested waters of Clearlake. I wonder who gave its name. It reminds me of Lake Elsinore in So. Cal. There's only one thing to say, disgusting. Dead fish floating from oxygen deprivation as a result of algae bloom, swathes of green slime on top of water. If you dare enter the water, there is less than two foot visibility.
This is a very large lake and there might be 10 boats at any given time.
Makes you wonder why.
If this is your destination of choice I'd suggest rethinking that.

Seriously, "Clearlake", it is not. This lake has so much filamentous blue-green algae that a more fitting name, as many reviewers have noted, would be "Green Pea Soup Lake. Excess nutrients (sewage, fertilizer, etc,) plus toxic mercury have destroyed this ancient natural wonder. As a photographer and bass fisherman I just kept going. Next.

We spent one day at Clear Lake as part of a road trip around northern California. When we finally reached our destination and got down to the lake, we found green water. Aquarists like myself are familiar with green water. It's an algae bloom of cyanobacteria sometimes found in new, planted aquariums. It's caused by excess nutrients in the water and usually only lasts a few days.
Green water in a lake is caused by agricultural fertilizer runoff and/or leaky sewage systems. Oddly enough, the water is the safest at the height of the bloom where most of the pollutants have been pulled out of the water by the algae, and the oxygen levels are high from photosynthesis. We saw fish jumping, grebes fishing, and even a pair of river otters diving for dinner without a care in the world.
Eventually one of the essential nutrients the algae needs is exhausted and the bloom starts to die. Some cyanobacteria releases toxins as it decomposes and oxygen is used up which can result in a fish kill. This means the days immediately after a bloom are the worst to go into the water. This explains why on a sunny summer day, there were no boats on the lake and nearly all the boat slips were empty.
We've been battling similar problems with the Chesapeake Bay, and after several decades we're making progress. The people of Clear Lake need to do the same: locate the sources of pollution and clean them up. Even of they succeed, the lake bottom is purportedly contaminated with mercury runoff from abandoned silver mines. Temporary exposure to low levels of mercury isn't a problem for swimming, but the rule is, the bigger the fish, the higher the concentration. Watch what you eat!
Good luck Clear Lake. I'm pulling for you but you've got lots of work to do before I come back.

This is a Federal Park, so it is kept clean and up to high standards. Lovely quaint (expensive) shops, few restaruants and nice beach. The water is very very cold, so you usally on see people swimming in there it is exceptional hot.

I have heard the water is life threatening to dogs, is this true? Or is it just the blue/green algae issue?

The water is fine. And if there are any warnings that may cause harm to your health, it will be posted. I’ve never seen that in over 30 years. But when CA has had a bad drought and the water level drops, the algae gets bad. It is a beautiful lake. It’s a Great Lake to ski and fish! Too bad Konocti is still closed but that will be the place to stay when it reopens.
Can you take dogs

The lake and creeks have Blue Green Alge, which is really Cyanobacteria. During the hot months, the Cyanobacteria is abundant, and dogs have died.

Hello!
Heading to Lower Lake in a few weeks. Is the water safe to swim in? Or should we just boat in it? I am reading about people getting rashes etc., and it is freaking me out. So I thought I would check.

It is safe unless there is a blue white slimy algae. The green stuff is just plant life. Water is best away from shore. Away from shore I would swim anywhere in the lake. Some areas have a lot of vine like weeds. Stay away from those areas when swimming or boating. It messes up the engine and prop. Swim, ski, have fun!

Hello, we are looking into a rental in the Clearlake area during the end of December. Would you say the water is pretty clear during that time? Also, do you know of any parks or hiking trails in the area. We are looking to spend some time outside with 2 young children (not necessarily in the water). Thank you for your time.

Based on what I was told during my visit, the algae problem is bad only in August-September. That said, it has been an extended hot & dry season in CA this year as you know. If you call some of the local businesses (hotels for example), ask them directly about the algae growth and the algae stench *right now*. The smell of the algae is apparently intolerable when active. I was there in the spring and could see bright green residue on the edges of the water, no smell at all, but we did pick up skin infections (deep red itchy bumps) from going in the water. I read an article just now from 9/17/2016 from East Bay and it was horrible this year. You're smart to check this out thoroughly before you go.

I am staying in Nice. I want to know about the best eating spots nearby, and around the Lake. A friend recommended a fine restaurant in an old, restored hotel building, but forgot the name? Help! Also, are there any lake trips/dining on the lake?
Hey ,
Due to heavy rainfall this year do we still have the smell problem ???

In June there was no bad smell (NOTHING AT ALL) but according to residents, the horrific smell is in August - September when the algae blooms. This is also when the entire lake turns green.

Hi,
Any recommended beaches around Clear Lake with nice sand that are kids friendly? Ideali places where we can get into the water.
Thanks!

So there's the actual lake, Clear Lake, and the city of Clearlake. The water's edge of the city is filled with cottage resorts that have family friendly sandy beaches. Sorry I can't recommend one because we always stayed with friends. Then, on the west side of the lake, there's the Clear Lake State Park by Kelseyville which also has camping etc. And just for a day kind of visit I like Lakeport, where the Library Park also has a playground, green lawn and gazebo areas and restaurants nearby. Library Park is downtown, on Park Street. I'm not familiar with Upper Lake and Nice, which are on the north and east edges of the lake.
