While visiting in the Aberdeen area, we took a drive out into the countryside to the west and north. On a rainy, overcast day (what else), and after driving around for some time, we finally found this stone circle which was listed on our map.
It is called the Midmar Kirk Recumbant Stone Circle. It is located around an old church and graveyard, just off of the B1119, west of the small village of Echt and about 16 miles almost straight west of Aberdeen city centre.
I see on some maps that there is another stone circle supposedly located not far east of this place, but we never saw it and probably drove by the location at least twice.
Anyway, the location and stone circle is interesting, particularly on a foggy day. It has "recumbant" in the name because at least one of the large stones lies on its side.
While a bit hard to find, if you are in Aberdeen for any length of time, we recommend taking the short drive west to this location.

This is unusul as the stone circle has been apporopriatedby the christians who have built a chucrch next to it and a gravyard around it, they have done a good job at preserving it and providing access. Very photogenic spot.

Non facilissimo da trovare imbucato dietro una chiesetta ma molto affascinante, il cerchio è quasi intatto e molto affascinante, anche arrivarci è un bel giro in mezzo alle stradine di campagna Certamente consigliato.

L'originalité de ce site est qu'il est situé dans un cimetière derrière une chapelle par ailleurs assez joli ( ce qui justifie la note "très bien". Mais si l'on ne passe pas dans les environs est-ce bien la peine de faire un détour ?

The Kirk is not far off the B9119 to Tarland up a hill and there is parking available. The circle is beside the church and in the graveyard and has a fantastic recumbent stone where you can just imagine what's going on. Small plaque covers some of the history. If you cross the lane at the top of the church and head into the trees you will find after about 75m an intriguing stone shape that I'll leave it up to you to decide what it might have been!
