If you're looking to drive for hours upon endless hours to go see a closed up coal mine that you can't get into with absolutely no notice from the operators, this is the place for you!

I've visited before so I have an inkling what it looks like when it's open.
The entrance sign is gone and the gate is locked.
Unless something is posted by the Mine operator, I wouldn't drive out there.

Interesting history of a coal miner's life. Tour of the coal mine was interesting. It's unimaginable how the miner's were able to work in such low ceilings, unable to stand.

I clicked on the website link and it does not work. I called the listed 1-800 phone number and got a convention center. The woman answering the phone told me that the mine is now closed.
I did not visit as it is closed. i wanted to visit next week.

As mining history buff and mining engineer I can say this is a really well done tour! There are lots of interesting artifacts from the areas mining history and underground tour is superb.

This is a great attraction and very reasonably priced. It really shows what it must have been like during the hey day of the coal industry.

Traveled with Repine Travel by bus to Elkins , West Virginia to board the Tygart Flyer through the mountain of West Va. It was an enjoyable rail ride with a "hobo " lunch included. It was very scenic traveling along the river on one side then the mountain on the other side. A guide on the train shared local lore and history which was very interesting. Wild life was noted, a 45 minute stop to walk around and explore the Falls. Our tour also included the Music theater with a great travel through the music time line. The day ended with a delious buffet at the Rail Yard Resturant.

It's a coal mine in an extremely wonderful area of Pennsylvania. We had arrived shortly after 1:00 pm thinking that we would not end up on that tour but luckily, the earlier tour had been running a bit late and we got on the 1:00 tour! After we paid for our tour, we got our helments and went outside where our tour guide was explaining how the air circulation in the mine works. Our tour guide was Ron and we was extremely nice/good at explaining our questions. Once we had boarded and took off, we had made 2 stops before entering the mine. The first one was to show how the coal tipple got it's name. The second one was to show mining equipment. Entering the mine, you go down a small grade into the darkness. The first stop in the mine was to show how men got out of the way of the coal carts. This was called a man hole. Then, we went in deeper. As you get in deeper, you hit a small tarp which is there to help the air circulation. That's when you begin to get to really see what mining is about. In the mine, you are about 20 feet or more underground. It is cold so be sure you bring a jacket. You are let out at two places to take a look around. One of the places is call "The Room". This is where mining equipment is shown and you actually get to pull a dynamite puller. Your guide will ask you if you want to do it. It's voluntary and does not do anything. After you get out of that area, you begin to head upgrade toward the entrance of the mine.
Once done with our tour, we had entered the little store they have there and bought some souveniors. The bucket of coal they have is actual coal that was mined here. There are several other items here as well.

Nice place to visit with the grand kids! The grandson asked many questions--the guide did not answer correctly on just one question.

I was here as a kid 30 years ago and have now brought my kids. You get to ride the train into the coalmine. There are a couple of places that the guide lets you get out for pictures. The guide we had was a retired coalminer and shared his personal experiences with us. Just check the hours of operation before you go. We went up one time just before lunch, I think, and they weren't open then.
