The Old HastingsM. & G., is a delightful little treasure situated in the heart of the country. It’s a planned visit several times over the summer and I love bringing friends and family who always finds a treasure they have not seen for years! Even men find it fascinating and usually find some thing that tickles their fancy !
Gary Lillian and Jessica are lovely people always willing to help find something that maybe has been tucked away. There is also the opportunity to have custom work done for Cottage items in the core of the lakes area. This includes signage glassware board games and clothing. dude drop in… You will love it ! ❤️

While camping in Silent Lake Provincial Park, I drove to this tiny settlement of Ormsby (population 20) and spent an hour in the Old Hastings Mercantile and Gallery, owned and operated by Lillian Oakley Pattison and Gary Pattison.

I had met Lillian a couple of times in Wilno, Ontario, where she ran the Wilno Craft Gallery. Some 19 years ago, while in the gallery, I got captivated by the music that was playing in the store—it turned out that the name of the CD was called “Seasoning” and she was the singer! I immediately bought the CD and since then I have been regularly listening to the wonderful tunes—paraphrasing ABBA, I should say, “Thank you for the music!”

Gary is also a very accomplished musician, playing the French horn for leading Canadian orchestras. Although I cannot play any instruments (yes, I tried to learn, but it was hopeless), I love listening to music! It was such a pleasure to chat with Gary about his accomplishments, the French horn, music in general and of course, the gallery itself.

The gallery has 11 rooms, each offering different gifts and merchandise. Exploring the rooms is like exploring a history museum! I was fascinated by vintage posters and postcards, books, paintings, cottage & Christmas ornaments, unique clothing, ceramics, glassware, sauces, spices, jams and thousands more original items. There was even a tiny room for children.

The Old Hastings Mercantile and Gallery is a place that MUST be visited while travelling in the area—and such a visit will definitely be an unforgettable and memorable experience!

The Old Hastings Mercantile and Gallery is a must-stop for 1) history buffs, 2) those with a nostalgic spirit, or 3) those looking for that "perfect something" for their Kawartha Lakes cottage. The store is a "walk back in time." All the products are new (and many are local) but all come with a nostalgic flair. There is something for everyone -- a Christmas themed room, a men's themed room, a room full of books, cards, and other stationary, a kids' section, a pets' section, and some clothing. Expecially neat is the opportunity to buy clocks, cribbage boards, maps, mugs, T-shirts, or ball caps all emblazened with a map of your favourite Kawartha Lake. If you're in the area is definitely worth a visit -- especially on a rainy day where you can't be on the dock! Make sure to tie your visit to the store in with lunch (or afternoon tea) at the Old Schoolhouse Tea Room right next door (check the hours!!).

I was impressed with the reasonable prices and made in Canada treasures. Many old antiques that are hard to find these days.

It was all good, right down to the free apples at the door....Gary & Lillian were great people along with their welcoming pooch "McDuff". Oh but hey they have a store jammed with unique items, many too good to take home to family and friends (you'll want to keep those for yourself, like I did)...Stop here, say hello, buy some stuff and go over to Gary's brothers place for lunch, or the other way around...either way you will surely enjoy all that village hospitality.

Gary here. Thanks for finding our wee hamlet. We appreciate your kind remarks. Lillian does love to give away those apples in the fall.

Very cool country store with nook and crannies filled with fun stuff. It's a rainy day dream. They have neat printed things of local lakes like coasters, cutting boards, hats. They have a large selection of books, candles, picture frames, lamps, creams , clothing, candy, baby items. Loads of gift items. They have antiques as well. The list goes on. I have to go back since there was soooo much to see!!

This is a great place to wander through and while away an hour or so. There are toy replicas from the past, mugs, candy and the list goes on. Definitely worth the drive. While you're there don't miss the Old SchoolroomTeahouse around the corner. Great food and interesting location.
