3 generations of family visited on a lovely March day.
We had a fabulous time. So calm and peaceful.
Saw a red squirrel too!

Well of course the arboretum is beautiful but so is the delightful cafe located in the visitor centre which it overlooks Lovely menu , including Christmas specials; recommend the Bacon , Cranberry and Brie toastie and mince pies. Great selection of homemade cakes and other goodies to go with fantastic coffee and friendly service. A great place for brunch, lunch or coffee and cake in a great location.

Feel compelled to write a review as I have just read Hilary's post about her visit last Sunday.
We also paid a visit to the Arboretum café last Sunday and have to say had lovely, freshly prepared food and the service was great, on what was clearly a very busy day! The café was full, but the staff very kindly got us extra seating and made it clear that there would be a wait as all the food is freshly prepared and they were experiencing an unusually busy day. We really enjoyed the soup (it was delicious!) and the cakes were superb. We visit the Arboretum regularly and it has much improved over the last month or so, in fact, maybe word has got out which is why it was so busy! The staff and service is always efficient and friendly, combined with quality fresh food and a wonderful location. We prefer this by far to the 'Big House' - which I understand is a separate entity to the Arboretum. Can't recommend highly enough.

We called in to the Arboretum on Sunday for a walk as the weather was so good. As expected, the trees were beautiful and it was lovely seeing the Red Squirrels and a variety of birds.
We then decided to go for coffee and a bite to eat. There was a short queue though every table, both inside and outside, was taken. As I waited, it became apparent that things were not running well. The 2 ladies in the ‘open’ kitchen looked to be run off their feet and were obviously not coping at all, working in such a cramped space. Most of the cake trays were empty, despite it being only 1:30. The poor lass at the coffee machine seemed overwhelmed and was not coping with the rush.
I decided that food was probably not a good idea so asked if they did takeaway coffees. Yes they did, but there would be a 20 minute wait. We decided not to wait.
I wonder if anybody from the Big House catering team ever comes across to see how things are going, or reads the recent reviews here, which, I note, are saying the same as me. It seems to be a mix of a lack of kitchen space, insufficient staff and a lack of training. Not good, Castle Howard.

What a delightful place to visit. We were not put off by the rain and the red squirrel enclosure was a real treat along with the turning leaves. The cafe afterwards was equally good with a very attentive manager who explained that they were having problems with the oven but was able to explain what was on offer. Plenty of options for gluten and dairy free diets (soup, bread, scones ice cream and brownies) the coffee was hot and tasty.

This is our first visit in three years , which had always been a great experience, especially in the cafe !
We had a lovely walk , met a few Squirrels which was great! Then visited the cafe . What a disappointment from start to finish. We waited over half an hour to order . There was no urgency, the poor staff looked lost , as it was very apparent that they had not been trained and were given no directive. The barista burned the milk , which made the coffee taste bitter . We waited 40 mins for coffee and soup which was Luke warm . We did receive hot soup when we brought the issue to the staff’s attention, which was served without a soup spoon . We were then given a desert spoon , after asking for a spoon .We over heard other tables mentioning similar experiences, all not good I’m afraid . Please look at your service as currently it isn't working, which is a shame !

Coming from the Midlands me and my family had never seen a red squirrel and to be able to visit them here at the Yorkshire Arboretum was incredible!! Entry fee of £12 (Gift Aid price) and options to donate to the red squirrels at the visitor centre/ shop.
Stopped at the cafe for a bite to eat and a drink and was greeted by a lovely lady who I assumed was in charge who greeted us and talked us through what was to offer and the variety of cakes on display. No receipts are given however, option to send it through via your email or text if you so required. Very dog friendly with a enclosed part especially for your four legged friends to roam free. Dogs are not allowed in the red squirrel enclosure for obvious reasons but apart from that they are free to walk alongside you on a lead at all times around the grounds.
Me and my family were lucky enough to witness and see the red squirrels and even had one running along the wooden bridge pathway through the enclosure. If you love nature and love animals definately a place to visit.
The only disappointment we faced was two very rude members of staff serving at the till kiosk on entrance clearly did not want to serve or talk to the public and we're very off putting. At one point we were made to wait to purchase an item at the gift shop as they were talking over a brochure amongst themselves which I personally thought was rude. There was also a slight grumble when I tried to pay for items in cash as they quote" didn't want to mess up the till" as all the change was cashed up into money bags and they did not want to have to open them up and give out change as if it was an inconvenience for them to do so. Apart from these two ladies the whole environment and atmosphere was lovely and made the day, it's just ashame that the two members of staff had to behave in this way. Don't let this put you off from visiting this amazing place as its worth the 5 stars I have appointed as I would not let two rude members of staff take a star away from the Arboretum.

Had a really lovely day here. Unfortunately cafe provision was limited but coffee and cake were superb. Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff who were really lovely. Able to hire a sturdy scooter which made our day even better.
Spent some time in the squirrel enclosure and after a short, quiet wait, a few made their appearance - so special.
The rest of the arboretum was beautiful and a walk around the small lake was nice, with a quick peek at the peacocks. Highly recommend!

It was a lovely morning out for us. We were there for a couple of hours on a Sunday morning and my toddler loved it. We only got a drink and snack in the cafe, it was quite expensive.

Is there any gluten free food available in the cafe please?
We have gluten free brownies, cakes, date and oat slice etc.
We also have gluten free bread and scones and all our soups are free too, so most things on the menu can be adapted!
