My spouse and I visited the Lowline Lab on a Sunday morning in mid-February 2017. The lab is currently open on weekends only from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm. No admission fee is charged, but donations are solicited so that the organization may proceed with the project someday.

The Lowline Lab is an exhibition located an abandoned market on Essex Street that opened in fall of 2015 as a prototype. The Lowline itself (should it open someday) will be located beneath Delancey Street near the base of the Williamsburg Bridge. Formally known as the Delancey Underground, the Lowline hopes to be the world's first underground park in the former 1948 Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal where streetcars looped around to ferry passengers to and from Brooklyn via the Williamsburg Bridge. The proposed Lowline area spans three blocks from Essex Street to Clinton Street, and boasts 20-foot high ceilings.

The lab hosts a variety of community activities, including discussions, art installations, and educational events. Small bistro tables and chairs are available, as are restrooms, limited concessions, and souvenirs.

We enjoyed our visit to the Lowline Lab, and we look forward to visiting the real thing someday.

It's pretty small so far but it promises to be quite grand when it is finally finished. It is still worthwhile to visit just to see a small sampling of the underground park, the idea behind the project and its progress, and the history of the tunnel that will eventually be the park.

Admission is free but they are not open everyday. Check their website for hours.

Cool exhibit. Doing lots of good engineering to optimize natural resources underground for a 'natural' garden

An intriguing space on the Lower East Side. If you are interested in environmental science, urban planning, weird futuristic ecosystems, or just cool stuff it's definitely worth checking out if you are in the neighborhood. The beginning of the exhibit explains the science behind the lab space in great detail. You can spend as much time nerding out on this as you like, or go on to the green space itself. It's a beautiful, other-worldly oasis in a dark raw space. The plants almost seem to have been chosen for their interesting names. The space is staffed by interesting young students and it's free but you are welcome to make donations.

I really hope this projects makes it into fruition!
The concept is really incredible - turning old subway stations into an underground garden.
The technology and how they refract natural light is very cool.
It is a small set up and not quite a tourist attraction, but we're glad we ran into it!

Its a lab. Not a tourist attraction. However for those with a curious mind its certainly worth a visit. A public and crowd funded project. The place was an unused underground tunnel. Its completely dark. So the idea of bending sunlight using a combination of mirror reflection, total internal reflection and tubing it down to the gardens took shape.
The plants look very lush and healthy. Possibly due to the effect of light polarisation.
Its a short visit. Its different from the usual tourist traps in NYC and certainly something new to be seen.

It's a very small exhibit. Seeing something that is to be is great but I would rather wait till the concept becomes reality. This will be something to see in the future. At least you were there in the beginning.

I headed here for what we thought would be a fun afternoon activity for our five and ten year old daughters. When we got in we realized that this is just a prototype of what they plan to build. The whole site is located in one room and for the time being there really isn't much to attract a family with young kids. I think this can eventually be a great outing, when the actual site is finished. We landed up leaving after maybe 5 or 10 minutes, very disappointed
