Our guide at Washington Place was knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. Throughout the house there are QR codes that lead to videos to help you learn more (though our guide, Zita, was extremely thorough!) My favorite part of the tour was upstairs where we could go in different rooms to see exhibits curated by Washington Place. I learned a lot about Liliuokalani and her life and amazing legacy. Additionally, the tour was small (15-20 people), which allowed for a better experience.

My wife and I attended the CCJ meeting in Honolulu this past February before the pandemic hit. A reception was held at Washington Place across from the Hawaii State Capitol. It is a beatifically restored building which once was the residence of Hawaii’s last queen and many of its governors. Docents were present to give us a brief tour of the first floor rooms. It is an interesting place and we had an enjoyable evening there.

Un superbe bâtiment à deux pas du State Capitol qui permet de découvrir un peu plus encore les arcanes de l'histoire de la ville.

Washington Place is across from the state Capitol and provides a great history of the early days of Hawai'i. Free tours are offered on Thursday mornings and I was sure to plan my O'ahu stay with time for this. The home served as residece for a wide range of occupants, including Queen Lili'uokalani and the Hawaiian state governors. Official functions and state dinners are still held in the beautiful formal dining room. The home has been carefully restored and has lots of interesting items on display. The docents share many stories of when the Queen was in residence. The tour lasts an hour and is worth a trip if you like history and stately homes.

If you are any type of traveler and history buff, this is one visit you must make. To fully appreciate and understand the Hawaiian history, this is a great place to start. The tour alone is worth the price and time, but coupled with the hostess that can share very intimate stories about the Queen and her family will provide you with an intimate "look" Back Into History.

This place is something most people don't think of as a historical place to visit. It is an important part of Hawaii's history leading up to modern times, but it wasn't until recent years did become open to the public for free tours every Thursday.
The tour space is very limited, so it is a good idea to plan in advance. You can easily book online to confirm available space. Again, it is free, so this is a no lose deal. The docents take you back in time to really help you understand everything about the property and events that have happened over time.
Being located next to the State Capital, Iolani Palace, and State Art Museum, you can make a day of it just touring Hawaii's history in one walkable area.
I don't recommend this for young children as it will be boring for them and they will disturb others who are trying to listen to the docent. This is a very adult and mentally mature type of activity.

Plan ahead because there is a bit of security at this historic house that used to be the Governor's Mansion. We went with a group that booked this very informative tour with the lady that had actually written a book about how and when the house was built, including why it became where the last Hawaiian Royalty lived, then many Hawaiian Governors. It has been beautifully restored and worth the trouble to learn all about it in person.

Wer kennt es nicht aus den Five-O Folgen den Gouverneurssitz. Gegenüber vom State Capitol an einer viel befahrenen Straße liegt dieses fast zierlich wirkende Gebäude

Built in 1847 the house looks like a southern plantation style mansion. It was the home of Queen Lili'uokalani the last Hawaiian Queen before she was deposed by the "provisional government" but these days it is the Governors House.
