Just so disappointed with this rip off place the charging is expensive and just out of reach for a lot of people . You can’t use cafe until you pay an entrance fee . We just walk away very upset

Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be possible for us to monitor those coming in to just use the cafe at this moment in time as it is in a separate building in our grounds. We apologise that you were unable to use the cafe on your visit.

We stumbled upon here without doing much research but I wish we didn’t. With all the birds from around the world presumably they clip their wings which I would really would never expect to see from a wetland charity. I understand they do a lot of work for conservation however it is at the expense of clipping birds wings, not just for breeding purposes but for entertainment of people paying to come see them. I felt sad to see the birds that could not fly off and be free. On top of this we paid an extortionate £16 something each for entry which just seems ridiculous as people who often go to RSPB nature reserves and pay no more than £5 entry (although most are free). I could see how this would be a nice family day out with however if you really care about birds I think you’re better going to a proper nature reserve where no birds wings are clipped. The part I enjoyed the most was the marshlands as it was much nicer to see the birds in their natural habitat where they have free will. Very disappointed in the charity.

Hi Georgina, thank you for your comment.
Over 99% of birds at WWT wetland centres are wild and free flying.
We have a small number of birds in our collection that help to engage visitors with nature, the challenges the birds face and raise awareness of the critical importance of wetlands. We are morally and legally bound to prevent escapes of these birds, which could harm native wildlife, but most likely the birds themselves.
The organisation takes the welfare of all birds on our sites incredibly seriously, and we have strict controls over our animal husbandry to ensure the birds in our care receive the highest welfare standards. Birds kept in large, naturalistic exhibits at our sites receive full protection, food and first class health care.
We’ve made a concerted effort over the last few years to significantly reduce the number of birds we pinion, by reducing the collection as a whole, carrying out feather clipping and building large aviaries wherever possible. We’ll continue to do this kind of work in the coming months and years.

Love Martin Mere and we are members visiting about once a month throughout the year with our 2 year old grandchild who also loves it there but ....
Cafe is overpriced - £7.50 for a child's fish and chips as an example but does reflect on the rest of the items - back to the picnics I suppose. To be fair fish and chips maybe regarded as a luxury at present and many people use the cafe but even so still pricey.

The day was interesting with quite a bit to see and do there. The flamingo talk was particularly engaging. Overall, it was a nice day out.

It took us over two hours to get there but it was certainly worth the journey! We last visited many years ago and enjoyed it then, but the highlight of this visit was being able to hire a canoe for an hour and paddle our way through the reed beds. Ian was very helpful and informative, gave us a safety talk and then we donned our life jackets off we went. During the hour on the water, we only saw one other canoe such was the extent of the lagoon. We took a picnic with us as there are plenty of benches and tables etc. dotted around the site so can't comment on the cafe. Toilets were exceptionally clean and there is plenty of car parking. We had a fantastic day, my only little niggle being that an A4 sized map could have been provided free of charge, as not everyone wants to pay the £3.50 for the guide on top of the entrance fee. Can highly recommend a visit here and especially the canoe safari!

Revisited after years since our first visit & we weren’t disappointed. It was a beautiful day & the birds/ducks/geese were all in full view. Lots of young coots, water hens & shell ducks about which were so cute. It’s so nice to be able to see everything so close & the otters were great fun.

We have been here a number of times but today I was with a severely autistic child. We sat outside the cafe. Whilst having our drinks, a gentleman from the maintenance team approached me very diplomatically and quietly asked if he could bring his noisy machine close to us as some work needed to be done. He obviously noticed my grandson had sensory issues. I can't praise his actions enough. It shows thought and consideration and he is a credit to Martin Mere. Unfortunately I didn't get his name.
Just a note about going there with children that have additional needs - from reception you can get a sensory pack. Included in the back pack were ear defenders, binoculars, sun glasses, a white board and pen and a notebook. You have to pay a deposit of £15 but that is returned when you hand the back pack back on your way out.
This shows that WWT have put thought, time and effort into making a visit a much easier experience when the visitors have additional needs.
With it being half term, there were different events/activities. We went to the meet and greet with Bing and Flop, the show with Bing and Flop and story time as well as pond dipping
Overall we really enjoyed ourselves as did the children and we will be returning in the near future.

Is the site pushchair friendly?
Escrita el 4 de agosto de 2020
Yes, the site is pushchair friendly. We have a double and went round with no problems at all.
You can even go round the "Wild Walk", although if it has rained there are a few soft spots, as it's a flat route at the moment.
There's also a lower viewing window for the otter area now so children can see in without having to be lifted up.
There are several Lego features around the site to look out for as well.
Have a great time if you go.

Hi - it depends on how old the child is as under 4s are free. If the child is between the ages of 4-16 then it would be £13.00 per adult and £6.95 for a child making a total of £32.95. If you wanted to pay the gift aid price, which, as a chatiry, allows us to reclaim your tax on this money for our charitable conservation work, then the total would be £36.25. Don't forget that you can also take out an annual membership for a 2 adult family for £88 per year and visit as much as you like. You can also pay the annual membership by a monthly direct debit of £7.33.
cheers
