I am wondering what the cost of your taxi was? Are the taxi drivers honest? Are there taxis a plenty for you to hire for a ride back to the cruise ship?
Where do you get Liras near the cruise ship?

We were in a minibus and were staying in Sirince, well, a stiff climb above the town. There will be tours from most ships as there are many day visitors and like everywhere on earth, the locals make their living from visitors, as we were staying locally and exploring the village before the hordes arrived we found it a lovely place to shop. Your cruise ship will be in Izmir or Kusadasi, the latter is much nearer and there is a large town as is Selcuk which has regular buses to Kusadasi and Izmir. There are local buses to Sirince. Our tour finished at Kusadasi and we taxied to Selcuk and caught the train to Izmir I went to taxi offices and got them to quote a fixed price, when they realise what you are doing, the price comes down sharply. There are ATM's in Selcuk. Kusadasi and Izmir which take Visa/ Mastercard, best if you have a travelcard in local currency. We found Turkey to be a modern country where we were and felt very safe, just take the basic precautions, especially in Istanbul.
