Well if there was a hell in Canada, then Gillam, Manitoba is it. I found it somewhat difficult to get simple neccessities in this town. Actually it's not that bad. It took me a while, but I did finally start to make friends with some people that lived on Michener Avenue. The first time I checked in to the Gillam motor inn in July 2008, the electric door unlocking mechanism was broken, and we had to borrow a ladder from a hydro employee to get in to our room through the window. A lot of the staff don't what's going on one day to the next, simply because many of them are new, and it's difficult to find people in this town that want to work. The food is alright, and whenever we did get housekeeping, there was a thorough job done. The restaraunt has hours posted when they might be opened, but it opens when people show up for work. There was one Thursday afternoon where one woman was left to wait tables, cook, answer the phone, and watch the front desk all at once. At one of my stays, my co-workers and I hadn't received housekeeping in 5 days, and there was no one at the front desk to complain to about it. Now it's not all bad. Sometime around June 2009, the inn was under new management, and changes are being made. This hotel also has a bar, and liquor vendor in the same building, and is walking distance from to the Via and Greyhound stations. The rooms at the inn also come with a coffee maker, microwave, 2 full size beds, regular size washroom, small tv with basic cable, and a heater. No A/C, not that you need it too often this far north. But it can get pretty noisy outside if you leave the window open as there is the train yard, and 2 bars nearby. If travelling to Gillam for work or whatever, and the option of a house to stay in is available, I would say take it. And bring food. The one grocery store in Gillam is only open 40 hours/week (closed Sun & Mon, 10-6 Tue, Wed, & Thu, 10-7 Fri, & 10-5 Sat) assuming people show up for work. There's also a gas station/convienience store & mini mall.…
