Espolon Lodge was nothing like I ever imagined. It was not easy to get there (flight, car, ferry and boat ride) but Futaleufu is nothing like I ever visited. It was a small town with settlers surrounded by beautiful mother nature. Everything was pristine and it seems everyone knew each other in town. From the town center, we drove unpaved road for a little bit to ride a boat to get to the inside of Espolon lake. There is a ferry that goes around regularly so we used both during our stay. After some time in our boat ride, I saw a vague image of a wooden structure hidden in the trees far away. As we got closer, I saw the lodge, out of nowhere, just like that. Walking in to the lodge it made me feel like there was just me and the nature but nothing else. All the distractions were disconnected, here I was in the middle of the lake in Chilean Panagonia. Everything was made of wood in the lodge and cabins so it felt like everything was alive in mother nature just like trees, plants and waterfalls surrounding the lodge. I enjoyed hiking around (did some maqui foraging), horseback riding in the lake village and playing with water toys (kayak and paddle board) on the lake. When there was no wind, the lake becomes a mirror and reflected the sky and clouds as if I could not distinguish the lake from the sky and the sky from the lake. One of the highlights was whitewater rafting at the world famous Rio Futaleufu. We went through 12-13 class 4 and class 5 rapids (plus a jump from a rock) and wow, that was the most exhilarating experience of my life. The guides were so professional. Overall, Espolon Lodge is one of a kind. Does it have luxury of Ritz Carton? Of course not. You come to a place like this because you want to have that direct contact with mother nature just as she presents herself to you. No filter, no modification but the honest and truthful herself. Weather can be tough (had some rain which brought temp lower) so you bring right gear. The host was super good at wood fire in those old fashioned stove and chiminea. When the night set in, enjoying fire and a good glass of Chilean wine while stargazing was so good, I felt like I was zillion miles away from all worries.…
