For our family of young and older adults, this was absolutely the most perfect house and location. Restaurants, stores and beaches are within close walking distance. Punta Uva, the town of Puerto Viejo, and attractions like the Jaguar Rescue Center are within easy biking or walking distance (including the restaurant La Pecora Nera). The jungle is all around, but the property is completely secured by fencing and there's a feeling of security as well as privacy. The managers (Mao when we were there) were so helpful, before and during our visit, and always available. The saltwater pool was lovely, and we had it all to ourselves since we rented the entire house. Star-gazing from the lounge chairs by the pool at night was amazing. Every morning we walked along the dirt road through the jungle to the beach to watch the sunrise. We took flashlights to see the leaf-cutter ants doing their thing along the path. Some mornings the howler monkeys would be right up overhead, which was thrilling to hear. There were so many different birds in the area around the house, including toucans. On the beach, where the nearby creek feeds into the ocean, there was a variety of shore birds there every morning. At the house, we spent most of our time at the pool or upstairs in the open kitchen area. It was always comfortable, with a ceiling fan as well as a floor fan and plenty of seating for six, including rockers and a hammock. It was the dry season so we had no problems at all with mosquitoes. The bedrooms were air conditioned, which provided a nice break from the humidity. The bedrooms also had screened windows that could be opened if preferred to a/c. We cooked a lot of our meals and found the kitchen well-equipped. If you rent the entire house there is also an indoor kitchen downstairs, but we didn't use it at all. There's a charcoal grill by the pool that we used one night to grill some fresh fish. Plenty of towels are provided, with extras for the pool. If you rent for an entire week, someone will come mid-week to clean, bring clean towels, and even change the sheets if you want. We loved the house. Away from the crowds of Puerto Viejo, but within biking distance, close to Playa Cocles (with a lifeguard and surfboard rentals), surrounded by nature, but also in the midst of a vibrant community, it was the perfect location for our family--just what we were looking for.
