This was a wonderful place to spend a week. The owners are terrific and went out of their way to take us places and to make sure we were comfortable. They treated us like family - In the best way! The gardens were lovely, birds and critters exciting, and nearby restaurants very good. We hope to return soon.

I really enjoyed staying at this house. It is about two stories tall which makes it about tree height. The only thing I was disappointed with was the wild life, because the description said, there are howler monkeys that were near the house and would wake you up at 5 in the morning. I don’t know if it is the time of year or if the description hasn’t been updated and the monkeys moved out of the area. The owners of the house are very nice and ready to help and answer any concerns you have. From the house is about a 5 minute walk to the beach. The house is on the right of a hotel called Shawanda. It’s a bit hard to see in plain sight. There still isn’t just as much wild life as I would have expected. But it still is a great place to stay I highly recommended it.

My girlfriend and I picked Angler's Lair based on the recommendation of a friend that stayed there a couple years ago. It is the most peaceful and serene house one could ever hope to luck up on the jungle. Clean, quiet (but for the "music" from the amazing wildlife) and relaxing. Janet and Nick are so down to earth and genuinely kind people and they did a great job of balancing how often they came around to check to see if we needed anything and giving us privacy. Nick even gave us an "orientation bike ride" around the area to make sure we'd know where to find the best beach spots and the closest places to grab food. Oh! They also have the sweetest dog that drops in every so often to hear about your adventures! This is absolutely a great place to stay and it gives you the full experience of the jungle and the beach.

We stayed at Angler's Lair over New Year's and had a great time. The accommodations were excellent. Outdoor kitchen. Outdoor living room. Outdoor shower. Inside bedroom. Felt like we were living in the jungle... because we were! And the beach was just on the other side of the road. Janet and Nick let us use their bikes and gave us the lowdown on restaurants and clubs. We saw all kinds of wildlife, up close and personal, and enjoyed our stay immensely. We just returned from Janet and Nicks perfect spot. We had everything we needed for a great 6 nights. Comfortable bed with soft sheets, french press coffee maker are just a couple of the special touches provided by the super accommodating hosts. Close enough to town for convenience, yet remote enough to see troops of monkeys and flocks of parrots, right from the hammocks on the porch! The great Playa Chiquita beach is down a path across the street. Washer and dryer availability is a nice bonus too. The books, and games were also a nice touch. We were on the pacific coast fighting the remnants of Otto and booked on the day we arrived.... The hosts had everything ready and waiting for us including some fruit, snacks and cold beers 😎! We can't say enough, no need to look further... stay here for a great trip! Thanks again for everything Janet and Nick!

Janet very kindly came to pick us up from our previous lodgings. The accommodation is the entire ground floor of a house set in a very lush jungle garden and even comes complete with a resident sloth, and howler monkeys who pass through loudly! The main living area is open to the elements on all sides giving a unique experience. The bedroom is like a cool cave, dark and chilled, complete with a gecko which made me jump on more than one occasion! We loved our daily visits from Zuri (ridgeback dog) and Delgado (friendly cat). And the bikes were a useful edition for shopping or exploring. The nearby beaches are beautiful. Nick & Janet were great hosts. Cooking dinner for us one night and taking us with them to a nearby macaw rescue centre. Recommended if you want to experience a little jungle life with some home comforts.

We really enjoyed our stay at Angler's Lair. The property is absolutely gorgeous, it is spacious and quaint at the same time. It truly feels like your own personal property. The owners were kind, accommodating, and helped us in any way they could. From booking our shuttle back to San Jose to giving us rides into town when they could and anti-itch cream, they were truly willing to do what was necessary to make our stay wonderful! There is a kitchen where we prepared breakfast, access to snorkel gear and bikes, which saved us a lot of money in the end! At night and in the mornings you could hear howler monkeys and frogs, which made for wonderful sleeping arrangements! The shower was always hot and the beer stayed cold in the fridge they had! The property is ~4K to town and only 2K to the best beaches around up at Punta Uva. There are nearby restaurants and markets that don't require you to go into town if you don't want to. We didn't have a vehicle, but a bike just worked fine. Further, they gave us a cell phone to use with contacts built in for taxis, etc, which was so nice to have! I only wish we could stay longer! The price was on-point as well! The only negative feedback is that because the owners live upstairs, you could hear them early in the morning. We are naturally early birds, so it was mostly fine, but for those that want to sleep in, might be a bit disruptive. They do their best to be quiet, but just the nature of the property. Also, they were doing some construction on the property while we were there and the sound of a saw made for less than private feeling. However, I understand you can't just cease all projects while people are there and while the weather is good, otherwise nothing would ever get done! But, something to keep in mind. But all in all, very quite, lovely, and truly a slice of paradise.

This was our first visit to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and what an experience it was! We were hoping to see a lot of wildlife and we didn't have to leave the property as Janet and Nick have regular visits from Capuchin and Howler monkeys, agoutis, blue morpho butterflies, black and green dart frogs, all types of birds (parakeets, toucans, trogons, hawks) and a even a sloth. Janet has created a beautiful garden that attracts all of these animals and numerous butterflies. There was nothing more relaxing than sitting in the open living area watching the wildlife and smelling the flowers on a daily basis. Janet and Nick are the most gracious hosts and went out of their way to make our stay one of the most memorable of our 4 week trip. They included us for Christmas dinner with their friends, took us to town to enjoy their restaurant, made very last minute arrangements for transport to Jaco when our car rental fell through, and even had bicycles available for our use. The short walk to the beach was as much of an adventure as the beach itself as we almost rode our bike into a sloth that was hanging from a tree branch. Nick and Janet provided excellent recommendations for places to shop and have dinner and we absolutely loved all of their suggestions. All were either a short walk or bike ride away. We used the bikes to get everywhere we needed to go and made it more interesting to be able to see all the small things just off the road, hidden trails, animals, birds. Angler's Lair is in the perfect location, half way in between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo, and an absolutely tranquil place to relax.

If there's a better place to stay in puerto Viejo I'd be hard pressed to find it. It's like visiting your favorite aunt and uncle in paradise. They've been so helpful and comforting. First day here Janet explained how to use the money (we had no clue.) She gave me a bandaid and antibiotic cream for my blister, drove us to town in her golf cart, fed us, and just made us feel comfortable in a place that she KNOWS is out of our comfort zone. It's just a good way to ease yourself in if you've never been here. The beach is super close and the house is off the beaten path. A little ways to get into town but there's plenty restaurants close by and a grocery store for you to buy things to cook yourself in the kitchen....just do yourself a favor and stop searching. You're not going to find a better place to stay or better people to stay with!

The two plus weeks we spent here were just wonderfull. It was a very relaxing and safe place to stay. We could take a bus to town or on down the beach if we were so inclined. There is a small grocery store very close that was nice. The beach is only a few minutes walk. Janet and Nic were the best hosts. We want to come back next year. I have stayed in a lot of places and this was definately top of the list!
