Puntarenas is the capital and largest city in the Province of Puntarenas. Nicknamed “La Perla del Pacifico” “Spanish Pearl”, the name Puntarenas comes from the portmanteau of Punta and Arenas, which means Point and Sands, respectively. The Puntarenas name is also given to the odd shape province of the same name. Its port Caldera, is one of the main ports, and the oldest port in the country. Once one of the most important seaports, Puntarenas is now a commercial fishing port for the country. Offering some of the most amazing fresh seafood; including lobster and shrimp. Puntarenas also serves as a terminal for ferries and a docking station for cruise ships traveling across the Pacific Ocean and the Panama Canal.
