In other rooms, you'll find cherry countertops, hand-hewn beams, whimsical touches and a wall of windows facing the morning sun. This unique log home is situated at the foot of majestic Hemphill Bald, less than a half mile from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. How this house came to be is quite a story. Three generations of the Alexander family have lived in the mountains above Maggie Valley. In the 1930s, the owner’s grandfather and grandmother, Tom and Judy Alexander, started Cataloochee Ranch, a guest ranch just down the road from Tom’s Stand that has served as a home away from home for generations of vacationing families. The owner spent childhood summers there exploring the mountains on foot and by horse. Later, he helped his parents build their own home away from home - Tom’s Stand. The owner’s parents, Tom and Jane Alexander, were respected journalists whose careers kept them in New York City and Washington, D.C. for much of their lives. His father’s mind was never far from his childhood home in North Carolina. In the 70s, Tom hatched a plan that his family would spend summers on a plot of family land near the Ranch and build a log cabin. By hand. That log cabin became Tom’s Stand. Each summer, that same family traveled to Maggie Valley to live an entirely different life. During the first few years, they camped outside. They slept in tents, ate dinners around a campfire and bathed at their Aunt Alice’s house down the hill. During the day, his dad would fire up his 1950s Air Force truck - called the Blue Goose - and drag massive oak logs from the surrounding woods. Back at camp, he’d hew them with a broad axe, notch them with a chainsaw and hoist them with a winch mounted on the Blue Goose. Those logs still make up the original structure of Tom’s Stand, centered on the dining room. The family worked on the original log cabin for years and everyone helped. The owner and his cousin Richard built the chimney and the front porch. His mom and little sister helped ***** the logs. His father built the main structure, and when that project wound down, he started building tables and lamps that remain in the home today. As the years wore on, his parents decided that it was time to bring in professionals to help build a second and then a third addition to Tom’s Stand. Each addition brought its own unique charm and showcased the natural beauty of the landscape. Today, your family can become a part of this rich history. You can enjoy mountain views from the porch. Then come inside, through heavy oak doors. Everyone loves the kitchen, with its high-beamed ceiling, hand-crafted cherry counters, antique gas stove and whimsical mural of outdoor life at Tom's Stand. You can then enjoy drinks in the living room, with its cathedral ceiling and arched glass wall. Later, you’ll want to soak up the warmth from the stone fireplace in the dining room before retiring back out to the porch to usher in the night. When you’ve had your fill of star gazing, head to the spacious master bedroom, where you’ll find more hand-hewn beams and a wall of windows facing the morning sun. Throughout the house, both inside and out, you’ll marvel at his mom’s collection of western North Carolina art. There’s also plenty of room for friends and family. Tom’s Stand has four bedrooms - two downstairs, including the Master. Upstairs, there is a bedroom and a sleeping loft. There is also a bedroom in the rustic guest cabin across the lawn - a 19th century log cabin. With its sizable lawn and mountain views, Tom's Stand is an idyllic spot for family vacations. Things to Note: Tom's Stand is in a remote location above Maggie Valley. You access it up a long gravel driveway that veers off the road to Cataloochee Ski Area. You do not need 4-wheel drive, but will need to maintain speed on the last uphill bit. There is plenty of parking in front of the barn. There is a three-night minimum stay. There are three bedrooms and a sleeping loft in the main house, including a downstairs Master. There is one bedroom in the rustic guest cabin across the lawn. There is no air conditioning. It stays cool enough in the mountains that you do not need it. In the owner's words..."My mother lived full-time in the house for years and, believe me, if the house needed it, should would have installed it!" The rustic guest cabin does not have central heating and is closed from November through March. The maximum occupancy during that period is 8. The tub/shower in the rustic guest cabin isn't functional. There are three bathrooms in the main house where guests can take a shower or bath. . Additional amenities: Full KitchenMás
